Holland America Line’s ms Zuiderdam has adjusted its current sailing after canceling a scheduled call to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, amid escalating violence in the state of Jalisco.

The ship is currently operating a 12-night, round-trip Historical Baja Peninsula cruise that departed San Diego on February 15, 2026 and is scheduled to return on February 27, 2026.

So far, the itinerary has visited destinations across Mexico, including Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto, Guaymas, Topolobampo, and Mazatlán. Puerto Vallarta had been scheduled for February 23, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by Ensenada on February 26, 2026 before returning to San Diego.

Passengers began sharing updates on social media as news spread that the Puerto Vallarta stop would be skipped. In a Facebook group for Holland America Line passengers, one traveler wrote:

“Our stop at Puerto Vallarta is cancelled tomorrow due to civil unrest. Looking forward to an extra day at sea as we’ve had six ports in a row! Puerto Vallarta seems so tame normally but the pictures coming out of there today says it’s a good call on Holland’s part.”

At this time, Holland America has not altered the itinerary any further. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line‘s Norwegian Bliss and Princess Cruises’ are both scheduled to visit Puerto Vallarta on February 25, 2026. As of now, there has been no public word from those cruise lines regarding any itinerary adjustments.

The cancellation comes after a wave of coordinated violence broke out across parts of western Mexico following the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

Mexican authorities confirmed that Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, died after being injured during a federal security operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, about two hours southwest of Guadalajara. He reportedly died while being flown to Mexico City. The operation targeted cartel activity in the region, and multiple cartel members were also reportedly killed during the confrontation.

In the hours after confirmation of his death, armed groups reportedly set vehicles and trucks on fire and blocked highways in several cities across Jalisco and neighboring areas. These tactics are commonly used by criminal organizations to disrupt security forces and restrict movement.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert urging Americans in Jalisco, including Puerto Vallarta, to shelter in place until further notice because of ongoing security operations, road blockades, and criminal activity.

The embassy also advised U.S. citizens to avoid areas where law enforcement or military operations are underway. This includes limiting highway travel, monitoring local news and official updates, following instructions from local authorities and hotel staff, and informing family and friends of their whereabouts.

The ship underwent significant refurbishments in recent years, including a two week dry dock in December 2025. The revamp included adding updated staterooms, refreshed public spaces, and enhanced dining and entertainment offerings while maintaining Holland America Line’s signature style. Stateroom categories range from interior cabins to oceanview and verandah accommodations, along with a limited number of suites.

ms Zuiderdam sails a wide variety of itineraries throughout the year, including Mexico, the Caribbean, and New England. The ship is known for longer, port intensive itineraries that appeal to guests seeking destination focused cruising rather than high energy resort style attractions.
