Passengers aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Legend reported the ship became stuck in the Baltic Sea late Friday after what several guests described as an apparent grounding while sailing from Tallinn, Estonia, to Helsinki, Finland.
Social media posts and cruise tracking data indicate the vessel experienced an unexpected delay shortly after departing Tallinn on June 12. Passengers claimed the ship remained stationary for several hours at sea before apparently resuming its voyage toward Helsinki.
The Spirit-class ship is currently sailing a 12-night Scandinavia and Baltic cruise that departed Dover, England, on June 7 and includes calls in Amsterdam, Warnemünde, Tallinn, Helsinki, Nynäshamn, Copenhagen, and Zeebrugge before returning to Dover.
One passenger aboard the ship shared on Facebook that Carnival Legend had become stranded overnight.

“Our ship is stuck on a sandbar in the Baltic Sea,” the passenger wrote. “We have now been stuck for 5 hours.”
The guest later said the incident was the first of its kind she had experienced despite having sailed more than 40 cruises. Further discussion of the situation quickly spread across social media as family members and cruise fans monitored the ship’s position online.
In a Reddit post on r/CarnivalCruiseFans, one user wrote that relatives aboard the ship reported Carnival Legend had run aground and was unable to continue its voyage.
“My family is currently on the ship and stated that they just ran aground on a sandbar and are currently stuck,” the user posted.

The same poster claimed passengers had not yet received information regarding how the situation would be resolved.
At the time, several users tracking the ship online noted Carnival Legend’s reported speed steadily decreasing before eventually showing no movement. Others reported that CruiseMapper temporarily listed the vessel’s speed as unavailable.
Cruise tracking data showed unusual maneuvers near Estonia

According to CruiseMapper, Carnival Legend departed Tallinn on June 12 and was scheduled to arrive in Helsinki at 7:00 a.m. local time on June 13. The ship’s next scheduled call is Nynäshamn, Sweden, on June 14.
Tracking data showed the vessel making several unusual course changes northwest of Tallinn before remaining in the same general area for an extended period. Cruise tracking data placed Carnival Legend approximately 10 miles offshore in the Gulf of Finland when the incident occurred, well north of Tallinn and between Estonia and Finland.

CruiseMapper later showed the ship underway again at approximately 10 knots, with an estimated arrival in Helsinki around 5:30 a.m. local time. While the vessel appears to have resumed its voyage, the reported speed remained significantly below Carnival Legend’s typical cruising speed of roughly 20 knots.
Weather conditions in the area appeared calm, with light winds and seas of approximately 0.1 meters.
Cause of incident remains unconfirmed

While numerous passengers described the incident as the ship becoming stuck on a sandbar, the exact cause has not been independently confirmed.
Some commenters reviewing maritime charts questioned whether a sandbar was present in the area, noting that charted water depths appeared substantially deeper than would typically be associated with a grounding.
As of publication, Carnival Cruise Line had not publicly commented on the reports or confirmed whether the vessel experienced a grounding, navigational issue, or another operational delay.
Despite the incident, tracking data indicates that Carnival Legend resumed movement and was continuing toward Helsinki.

Following its current Scandinavia and Baltic sailing, Carnival Legend is scheduled to spend the remainder of the summer in Europe. The ship will operate a mix of Northern Europe, Baltic, British Isles, Iceland, and Mediterranean itineraries from Dover, England, and Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy.
Highlights include cruises to Iceland and the British Isles, Scandinavia and the Baltic, Northern Europe, and multiple voyages to the Greek Isles, Turkey, Croatia, and Italy. At this time, it’s unclear if Carnival Legend’s future itineraries will be impacted or if there is damage to the vessel.
Carnival Legend recently returned from dry dock

The reports come less than a month after Carnival Legend completed a scheduled dry dock and returned to service with a refreshed appearance.
Carnival Cruise Line announced on May 20 that the Spirit-class ship had completed a 16-day dry dock in Freeport, Bahamas. The project introduced the cruise line’s new “From Sea to Shining Sea” bow crest, a patriotic design that Carnival says will eventually be rolled out across much of its U.S.-based fleet.
The updated bow design debuted just ahead of Memorial Day weekend as part of Carnival’s broader America250 celebrations leading up to the United States’ 250th anniversary. At the time, Carnival President Christine Duffy described the new look as reinforcing the cruise line’s position as “America’s Cruise Line.”
Other cruise ships have run aground and continued sailing

While reports surrounding Carnival Legend remain unconfirmed, cruise ship groundings are not unheard of and do not always result in significant damage.
One notable example occurred in May 2015 when Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Dawn ran aground while departing King’s Wharf in Bermuda. According to Norwegian Cruise Line, the ship temporarily lost power while leaving port, affecting its propulsion system and causing the vessel to make contact with the channel bed.
The 92,000-ton ship was carrying 2,675 passengers and 1,062 crew members at the time. Maritime officials reported that no passengers were injured, the vessel was not taking on water, and there were no signs of pollution. The ship was eventually refloated and inspections found only minor damage, allowing the vessel to continue operating.

A more serious grounding occurred in March 2022 when Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Escape struck the seabed while departing Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. The 164,000-ton vessel, which can accommodate more than 4,000 passengers, became stranded overnight before being refloated during high tide and returning to port for inspections.
Norwegian Cruise Line later confirmed the ship had sustained damage to its hull. The remainder of the voyage was canceled, passengers were disembarked in the Dominican Republic, and the following cruise was also canceled to allow for repairs.
Those incidents demonstrate why the outcome of a grounding can vary significantly. Some ships are able to resume service quickly after inspections reveal only minor damage, while others require repairs to underwater components such as the hull, propellers, rudders, or stabilizers before returning to service.
