I recently sailed on a bucket-list itinerary from Sydney, Australia, to Singapore aboard Celebrity Solstice. Our 15-night cruise included stops along the Australian coast, followed by an overnight stay in Bali.
While we were super excited for this port-intensive itinerary, packing for this Australia and Bali cruise was honestly more difficult than I expected!
Our repositioning itinerary covered a huge distance, and the weather changed significantly along the way. We departed Sydney at the end of October, when it was cool and rainy during our visit. As we sailed farther north toward the equator, the temperatures steadily increased.
By the time we reached Bali, it was hot, humid, and downright stuffy at times!
This meant we needed to pack for cooler days exploring Sydney, sunny beach excursions, and long afternoons sightseeing in tropical climate. On top of that, I needed enough clothing for nightly dinners and onboard lounging throughout a 15-night sailing.
Some of my outfits were chosen for comfort, while others were admittedly more about getting cute vacation photos. There were definitely days when I appreciated my practical clothes more than others!
If you’re wondering what to wear and pack on an Australia and Bali cruise, here’s a look at the outfits I wore in each destination, along with onboard attire, footwear, and the packing tips I would recommend for this itinerary.
What is the weather like on an Australia and Bali cruise?
Our cruise departed in late October and continued into early November. Although this is spring in Australia, the conditions we experienced in Sydney were very different from the tropical weather farther north.
For this sailing, I prioritized packing mostly summer clothing with a few versatile layers for the cooler days onboard. Here’s how I would think about the different parts of this route:
- Sydney: Prepare for spring weather with some cooler days. We experienced both sunshine and pouring rain, so I appreciated long sleeves and a jacket.
- Brisbane: Our visit was warmer and sunnier. A lightweight dress and sneakers worked well for a day outside.
- Airlie Beach and Cairns: Prioritize warm-weather clothing, swimwear, and sun coverage. November through April is generally hotter, more humid, and wetter, while May through October brings milder temperatures and generally drier conditions.
- Darwin: Expect heat and increasing humidity around this time of year. October through December is a period of storm activity as the region moves toward wetter conditions.
- Bali and Singapore: Bali was very hot and muggy during our stay. Singapore has high temperatures and humidity throughout the year, with frequent rainfall, so lightweight clothing and rain protection are useful.
Sydney, Australia
Sydney was the coolest part of our trip in late October, and the weather changed enough that I wore several different types of outfits during our stay.
On our sunnier day, I wore an athletic skort with a casual shirt and my black denim jacket. This gave me a comfortable outfit for exploring after a long flight from America, with an extra layer when I needed it.
The next day, I wore a long-sleeve black dress with white sneakers while sightseeing around Sydney. The sleeves were perfect for the cool, rainy weather and I packed a light rain jacket in the morning. During both days, I wore my favorite walking shoes: a pair of white Hoka Bondi 9 Sneakers!
Embarkation day was a different story, as it was pouring rain! I wore my new Sydney T-shirt with another athletic skort for boarding the ship.
Looking back, Sydney was more of weather anomaly throughout this entire trip, as most of our ports were warmer. I was thankful that I packed layers to wear in Sydney, but also glad I didn’t waste more space. The rest of our trip was much warmer!
Brisbane, Australia
In Brisbane, we visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (highly recommend!), and the weather was warmer and sunnier than it had been in Sydney.
I wore a casual black dress with white sneakers, which was a comfortable combination for walking around the sanctuary. Of course, I also wanted an outfit that would look cute in photos with the koalas and kangaroos!
This is one of my favorite outfit combinations for cruise ports. A lightweight dress takes very little effort, and comfortable shoes make a big difference when you’re on your feet for much of the day!
Airlie Beach, Australia
Our stop in Airlie Beach included a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, which was another bucket-list experience!
For this excursion, I wore a long-sleeve swimsuit with a white gauze cover-up and white linen shorts. We disembarked from our ship directly to a large catamaran that brought us to the Great Barrier Reef.
The cover-up and shorts gave me something comfortable to wear over my swimsuit while traveling to and from the reef. I also liked having the extra coverage of a long-sleeve swimsuit.
Our excursion operator provided full-body protective suits for snorkeling, which we wore in the water.
Before your own reef excursion, check what your operator supplies and what you need to bring. The equipment provided on our tour might differ from yours, so I wouldn’t assume everything will be included.
Cairns, Australia
During our visit to Cairns, we visited Kuranda, and by this point in the cruise, the warmer weather was very noticeable!
I wore white shorts with a short-sleeve black top that was comfortable for exploring Kuranda. The rest of my family also chose summer clothing, including shorts and tank tops, since we were spending the day outside exploring.
Even in the shade, it was pretty warm, so this was a day when I appreciated having a comfortable outfit without extra layers.
Darwin, Australia
Darwin was one of the hottest stops on our cruise, especially during our excursion into the Australian Outback!
We spent time outside with very little shade, and the heat was intense. Everyone in my family opted for comfortable summer clothing and breezy outfits.
I wore a black linen romper, while my sister chose an athletic dress. My parents both wore shorts, sneakers, and lightweight tops. Even still, there was no escaping how hot it felt in the sun!
This was a port where I would put comfort at the top of the packing list. Lightweight shorts, loose tops, athletic dresses, and breathable outfits would all be options to consider.
Bali, Indonesia
Our overnight stay in Bali was the highlight of the itinerary. We had two full days to explore, and we spent both of them out sightseeing around the island.
It was also very hot and humid, so we were covered in sweat by the end of the day!
I’ll admit that I leaned a little more toward style than practicality for these days. I wanted outfits that would look cute in photos, and Bali felt like the perfect place to wear colorful dresses.
On our first day in Bali, I wore a floral dress with puff sleeves from Amazon and my rubber sandals.
This dress was comfortable and breezy, so it offered a nice balance between looking cute and feeling reasonably comfortable in the heat. I loved the floral pattern for photos, and it was an easy outfit to put together.
Of my two Bali outfits, this was the more practical choice for a full day of exploring. The rest of the family wore shorts, lightweight tops, and sneakers for walking.
For our second day in Bali, I wore an off-the-shoulder dress with a green tropical print, again paired with my rubber sandals. This outfit wasn’t quite as practical, but I loved the photos I took in it!
However, I would probably choose an easier outfit next time, as it was quite hot and muggy. My sister’s outfit was much more practical with a white linen skirt and short-sleeve top.
Singapore
Singapore was our disembarkation port, and it was another hot and humid stop.
For exploring the city, I wore white shorts with an off-the-shoulder black top. My family also opted for summer clothing, which suited the temperatures we experienced.
We did a ton of walking, so comfortable walking shoes are especially important here. This is a destination where I would plan my footwear before worrying about the rest of the outfit. Be sure to pack your sunscreen, portable fan, and sunglasses for exploring Singapore!
Onboard Outfits
During the day, our onboard outfits were very casual. We mostly wore shorts and T-shirts, especially as the weather warmed up farther north.
For a 15-night sailing, I appreciated having comfortable pieces that could work for both port days and relaxing around the ship. Casual tops, athletic skorts, and shorts were useful throughout the trip.
We also had an equator-crossing ceremony, sometimes called Neptune Day, which meant spending a while outside. This was a good time for lightweight outfits and tank tops. My sister especially loved her big bucket hat for the extra sun coverage.
When planning sea day clothing, think about time outside as well as inside the ship. A comfortable outfit, sun hat, and an easy layer give you options throughout the day.
Evening Attire
Since this was a 15-night cruise, I packed quite a few dresses for dinner.
Most were spring and summer styles, although I brought a few with long sleeves. I wore the longer sleeves around the Sydney portion of the trip, then switched to lighter summer dresses as temperatures increased.
We had three dressier evenings during our sailing, but I didn’t pack outfits specifically for those nights. Instead, I prioritized dresses I could wear both onboard and ashore.
That approach gave me more opportunities to wear what I brought. A dress that worked for sightseeing or photos in port could also become a dinner outfit.
Check the dress guidance for your sailing before packing, but consider how many outfits you really want to bring exclusively for evenings. For this trip, versatile dresses were more useful to me than separate formalwear.
