Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas say a “man overboard” scare on March 20, 2026 appears to have been caused by a prank. The incident quickly spread across social media, with guests sharing accounts on Reddit and Facebook.
According to passengers onboard, the crew issued an “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” announcement around 1 p.m., the maritime code used to signal a person overboard.
Initial reports suggested that someone may have gone overboard, prompting what appeared to be an immediate response from the ship, including slowing down and altering course. Cruise tracking data from CruiseMapper appears to support this, showing a temporary deviation in the vessel’s route.

At the time of the incident, Oasis of the Seas was on its final sea day, sailing north of Cuba near Cayo Romano as it made its way back to Florida. The vessel has since resumed its course and is expected to arrive as scheduled.
The ship is currently sailing a 6-night Western Caribbean itinerary from Fort Lauderdale, departing March 15 and scheduled to return on March 21, with stops in Nassau, San Juan, and Puerto Plata.
Overboard incident appears to have been caused by a prank

According to posts shared on social media, a false claim that someone had fallen overboard appears to have triggered the ship’s emergency response.
As additional details began to circulate, passengers aboard Oasis of the Seas said it became increasingly clear that no one had actually gone overboard. Instead, several passengers said the situation may have stemmed from a prank involving kids.
“Turns out it was a prank. A little girl had her friends tell her grandma she fell overboard,” one passenger wrote in a Facebook group.
Another person similarly stated, “The person who was alleged to have gone overboard did not… it was a young person making a prank.”
Passengers said the captain later addressed the situation, confirming that no one was in the water and that the ship would continue on its scheduled course. While the incident was ultimately resolved without injury, it still prompted a significant response from the crew and left many passengers confused as the situation unfolded.
Royal Caribbean has taken strict action in similar incidents
In previous incidents, Royal Caribbean has taken a firm stance on dangerous behavior onboard.
While false alarms are not uncommon in the cruise industry, they are typically caused by unclear reports and not intentional actions. Incidents like this, where a prank may have triggered a response, are far less common.
In one widely reported incident, a 27-year-old passenger was banned for life after jumping from the 11th deck of Symphony of the Seas while the ship was docked in Nassau, Bahamas. The stunt, which was filmed and later shared on social media, showed the passenger climbing onto the railing before leaping an estimated 100 feet into the ocean below.

Royal Caribbean quickly responded, calling the act “stupid and reckless behavior” and confirming that both the individual and his companions would be banned from sailing with the cruise line again.
After the jump, the passenger was not permitted to reboard the ship and was required to arrange his own travel home from the Bahamas. His friends were also removed from the cruise and issued lifetime bans from Royal Caribbean.
In a more recent incident, a group of livestreamers was removed from Harmony of the Seas mid-cruise after allegedly harassing passengers, filming guests without consent, and engaging in a physical altercation on the pool deck.

According to passenger reports, ship security intervened, confined the individuals, and escorted them off the ship at the next port, where they were forced to arrange their own travel home.
In this way, cruise line policies allow for a range of consequences when safety rules are violated. These can include intervention from onboard security, loss of privileges, removal from the ship, and even lifetime bans, with parents often held responsible for the actions of their children.
Frustration grows over unruly behavior of kids onboard

Across social media, multiple passengers described ongoing issues with unsupervised children and teenagers throughout the sailing. This suggests the situation may not have been an isolated incident. Several accounts pointed to disruptive behavior in both public areas and cabin corridors, particularly during late evening hours.
Passengers reported groups of children running through hallways, knocking on doors, and creating noise that disturbed other guests. Others described crowded common spaces where behavior was perceived as unsafe or inconsiderate, including in elevators, stairwells, and onboard venues.
“Kids shrieking at the top of their lungs up and down the hallways day and night,” one passenger wrote. The same individual added that children were “stealing stuff off cabin doors, blocking staircases, [and] messing around in elevators.”
Additional passengers expressed frustration with what they viewed as a lack of supervision.
“The kids are out of control and the parents are not paying attention,” one guest wrote, while another described “no respect for others whatsoever.”
About Oasis of the Seas

Oasis of the Seas is one of the most recognizable Royal Caribbean ships and was a game changer for the cruise industry when it launched in 2009. As the first ship in the Oasis Class, it introduced a completely different approach to cruise ship design, centered around distinct “neighborhoods” rather than a single continuous layout.
Today, the massive Royal Caribbean ship can carry more than 6,000 passengers at full capacity, making it one of the largest cruise ships in the world. It was also significantly amplified in 2019 as part of Royal Caribbean’s modernization program, adding newer restaurants, updated public spaces, and refreshed accommodations.
One of the defining features of Oasis of the Seas is its neighborhood concept. Guests can move between areas like Central Park, an open-air garden with real plants and upscale dining, and the Boardwalk, which has a more casual, family-friendly feel with attractions like the carousel and AquaTheater. The Royal Promenade serves as the ship’s main indoor hub, lined with bars, shops, and entertainment venues.

The ship is packed with activities, including multiple pools, surf simulators, a zip line, rock climbing walls, and large-scale production shows. It’s designed to feel more like a floating resort than a traditional cruise ship, with enough to do that many passengers never feel the need to leave the ship at all.
Because of its size and wide range of attractions, Oasis of the Seas is especially popular with families. During peak travel periods like spring break and summer, that can mean a higher number of children and teenagers onboard, which can noticeably change the atmosphere compared to off-season sailings.
