Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line are two of the biggest names in the cruise industry. Both cruise lines appeal to travelers looking for a slightly more elevated cruise experience without paying for a luxury or ultra-luxury cruise line. When it comes to Celebrity vs. Norwegian, I’ve sailed both cruise lines extensively, yet one continues to impress me more than the other.
Technically, Celebrity Cruises is considered a premium cruise line, similar to Princess Cruises and Holland America. In contrast, Norwegian Cruise Line falls into the mainstream category alongside Royal Caribbean and Carnival. However, I’d argue that a cruise with Norwegian aligns more closely with Celebrity compared to Carnival.
Between Celebrity and Norwegian, I’ve had opportunity to experience everything from their newest and most impressive ships to some of their oldest and smallest vessels.
Most recently, I cruised aboard Celebrity Equinox during a South America sailing and Norwegian Pearl on a Mediterranean itinerary. I’ve also sailed on several of Celebrity’s newest Edge-class ships, including Celebrity Apex to Norway and Celebrity Edge to New Zealand. And last year, I cruised across Australia and Bali aboard Celebrity Solstice.
When it comes to Norwegian cruises, I’ve experienced both ends of the spectrum as well. I’ve sailed on Norwegian Viva, one of the cruise line’s newest ships, along with older vessels including Norwegian Sun in the Mediterranean, Norwegian Jade to New England, Norwegian Dawn to Africa, and Norwegian Star across the United Kingdom.
While neither cruise line is objectively better than the other, each excels in different areas. After cruising substantially with both cruise lines, here are the biggest differences I’ve noticed in the Celebrity vs. Norwegian debate – and why I usually choose Celebrity.
Celebrity offers a more upscale and relaxing onboard atmosphere
In my opinion, one of biggest differences for Celebrity vs Norwegian is the overall vibe onboard.
Celebrity Cruises feels more refined from the moment you step onboard. The ships emphasize modern design, elevated dining, and destination-focused experiences. While families can sail with Celebrity, the onboard atmosphere is definitely skewed toward adults.
Similarly, many of Celebrity’s public spaces feel more like a boutique hotel than a traditional cruise ship. This is especially true on the newer Edge-class ships, where venues like Eden, the Rooftop Garden, and the Magic Carpet create unique gathering spaces. These incredible spaces feel distinctly different from what you’ll find on other cruise lines.
Norwegian takes a more inclusive approach, as the cruise line designs its ships and onboard experience to appeal to a wide range of travelers, including families, couples, solo cruisers, and multigenerational groups.
As a result, Norwegian ships often feel livelier and busier. You’ll typically find more activities, families, onboard attractions, and nightlife onboard most of Norwegian’s ships. Because of this, you can also expect to find a wider mix of guests onboard with more children.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere, Celebrity is definitely a better choice. If you prefer a higher-energy vacation with something happening around every corner, or if you’re traveling with kids, Norwegian is a good fit.
Norwegian offers more freedom and flexibility
Unlike many cruise lines that traditionally assigned dining times and dress codes, Norwegian built its brand around flexibility with its “Freestyle Cruising”. Guests can dine when they want, where they want, and generally enjoy a more casual vacation experience.
While most cruise lines have moved toward flexible dining over the years, Norwegian still feels the most relaxed.
Like most cruise lines, Celebrity has become more flexible as well, particularly since introducing Anytime Dining and moving away from some of the more formal traditions that once defined premium cruising. However, Celebrity still maintains a slightly more refined atmosphere throughout the ship with more structure.
Cruisers who prefer a completely casual vacation experience often gravitate toward Norwegian, while those looking for a slightly more elevated experience may prefer Celebrity.
Celebrity’s ship design is more intentional
I’ve enjoyed ships from both cruise lines, but Celebrity consistently impresses me more when it comes to ship design. When comparing the newest ships in the Celebrity vs Norwegian debate, I would choose Celebrity’s newest ships over Norwegian’s any day.
Truthfully, the Edge-class ships are some of the most beautiful cruise ships I’ve ever sailed. Every venue feels carefully planned and meticulously designed, from the stunning Grand Plaza to the open-air Rooftop Garden and multi-level Sunset Bar.
Just as importantly, the ships feel spacious. Even when sailing at full occupancy, I’ve rarely experienced crowds or lines onboard Celebrity’s newer ships.
On the contrary, Norwegian’s newest Prima-class ships are beautiful as well, particularly the new Prima class ships. These brand-new ships feature plenty of outdoor space and modern finishes throughout. On paper, they might look comparative, but that hasn’t been my experience.
I’ve found that some of Norwegian’s newer ships can feel very crowded despite carrying fewer passengers than similarly-sized Celebrity vessels. For example, Norwegian Viva accommodates approximately 3,100 guests at double occupancy, compared to about 3,260 guests on Celebrity Ascent.
Despite carrying fewer passengers, Norwegian Viva often felt busier during my sailing, which surprised me. Popular venues such as the Surfside Café buffet, pool deck, and theater frequently became congested during peak times.
Not to mention, the pool was comically small on Norwegian Viva with very few chairs for the number of people onboard. It felt like we were constantly battling crowds on our Prima class voyage, and it did dampen the new-ship experience.
On the other hand, Celebrity’s larger public spaces generally felt more open and comfortable with better passenger flow. We never struggled with waiting in lines or fighting for a pool deck chair.
Norwegian is better for solo travelers and families
Few cruise lines cater to solo travelers better than Norwegian. We’d be remiss not to mention solo cruising when discussing Celebrity vs Norwegian, as Norwegian remains one of the best cruise lines for travelers sailing alone.
Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered solo cabins and continues to offer some of the largest selections of single-occupancy staterooms at sea. Many ships feature dedicated Studio cabins and exclusive lounges where solo travelers can meet one another throughout the voyage.
Celebrity has introduced solo cabins on newer ships, but the selection remains much more limited.
Norwegian also tends to be a better choice for families, particularly on newer ships. Attractions like the the brand-new AquaSlide Coaster, Viva Speedway, multiple waterslides, virtual reality experiences, and expansive youth programs provide more entertainment options for children and teens.
As discussed, Celebrity welcomes families onboard, but the cruise line clearly focuses more on adults. You won’t find the same race tracks, giant waterparks, or thrill attractions onboard, so kids might actually get bored without much to do.
Celebrity has a better dining experience
Dining is one of the areas where Celebrity has always impressed me. Across nearly every Celebrity ship I’ve sailed, I’ve found the food quality to be excellent. The cruise line places a strong emphasis on presentation, ingredients, and variety.
For instance, Oceanview Café buffet is among the best at sea, with spacious layouts, high ceilings, and a wide selection of freshly prepared options. Additionally, Celebrity’s four complimentary main dining rooms on Edge-class ships provide a more upscale dining experience than you’ll typically find on mainstream cruise lines.
That’s not to say Norwegian’s dining is disappointing. In fact, one of my favorite complimentary dining venues on any cruise ship is Norwegian’s Indulge Food Hall on the Prima class ships.
The innovative concept allows guests to order from multiple international food stations directly from their table, and the food quality was impressive for a complimentary venue.
Norwegian also offers a larger variety of specialty restaurants across much of its fleet. However, many specialty venues feature à la carte pricing, which can make dining costs add up quickly without a dining package.
Norwegian is typically more affordable, but you get what you pay for
Pricing is one of the most notable differences when comparing Celebrity Cruises vs Norwegian Cruise Line. As a mainstream cruise line, Norwegian generally offers lower fares than Celebrity.
According to pricing data from All Aboard Deals, Norwegian Cruise Line’s average cruise fare is currently around $138 per person, per night, compared to approximately $173 per person, per night for Celebrity Cruises. This is roughly a 25% difference in price, which can add up quickly on longer sailings.
Part of the reason for the price gap comes down to how the cruise lines brand themselves. Celebrity is considered a premium cruise line, and its higher cruise fares reflect that.
Celebrity Cruise guests are paying for a more refined onboard atmosphere, elevated dining, contemporary ship design, and more personalized service. In my experience, Celebrity lives up to the expectations often associated with a higher price point. Like they say, you get what you pay for!
For instance, expect more nickel-and-diming with Norwegian. For instance, you’ll only be able to order one entree each evening in the main dining room. If you order more than one entree, you’ll have to pay $5 extra.
On the other hand, Norwegian often includes more perks upfront through its popular Free at Sea promotion. This pricing can include a drink package, specialty dining credits, free Wi-Fi minutes, and shore excursion credits. These benefits can make Norwegian’s pricing more appealing for budget-conscious travelers, especially if you’re already considering a drink package.
Celebrity offers a similar pricing option through its All Included fare, which bundles a Classic Drink Package and Basic Wi-Fi Package. However, even with comparable perks, Celebrity’s cruise fares will often cost more than a similar Norwegian sailing.
At the end of the day, the price difference of Celebrity vs Norwegian reflects the experience you’ll find onboard. Overall, Norwegian is usually the more affordable option, while Celebrity charges a premium for its more upscale atmosphere, dining, and service.
I have more confidence cruising with Celebrity
When thinking of Celebrity vs Norwegian, I truthfully have more confidence cruising with Celebrity.
After sailing both cruise lines extensively, I’ve found that Celebrity tends to provide a more consistent experience. From embarkation and dining service to onboard communication and itinerary planning, it feels like a smooth operation. While no cruise line is perfect, Celebrity often feels like a company runs like a well-oiled machine.
By comparison, I’ve experienced more hiccups during my Norwegian cruises over the years. Most haven’t been major issues, but they can add up over the course of a vacation. I’ve also sailed on Norwegian itineraries that ended up looking quite different from what was originally advertised, which can be frustrating when a specific itinerary is one of the main reasons you booked a cruise in the first place.
As a destination-focused cruiser, I always worry that Norwegian will alter my planned itinerary. I book cruises for the ports of call, and I’ve experienced too many Norwegian sailings with dropped ports, last-minute changes, and additional sea days.
At the end of the day, I book cruises with Celebrity because I have more confidence in the brand. Celebrity has earned my trust over the years by delivering a consistent vacation and avoiding many of the unwanted surprises I’ve encountered elsewhere.
While I’ve had some excellent cruises with Norwegian, Celebrity is the cruise line I feel more comfortable trusting with my vacation time and money.
Celebrity vs Norwegian: Which is better?
After taking many cruises between Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, I find myself booking Celebrity more often. Even after 55+ cruises across multiple brands, Celebrity is my favorite cruise line.
I prefer Celebrity’s more upscale atmosphere, thoughtfully designed ships, better dining, and destination-focused approach. Just as importantly, I’ve found the cruise line to be more consistent over the years, which gives me more confidence when spending my vacation time and money.
This doesn’t mean Norwegian isn’t a great choice. I’d choose a Norwegian cruise over Carnival Cruise Line any day! In addition, Norwegian is the better choice when it comes to flexibility, family-friendly attractions, and solo traveler accommodations. Norwegian’s fares are often lower, and Free at Sea perks can make the cruise line especially appealing.
Ultimately, the right choice depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a more refined experience with excellent dining and beautiful ship design, I’d choose Celebrity. If you prioritize flexibility, family-friendly attractions, and affordability, Norwegian may be the better fit.
