Carnival Sunshine loses power ahead of Norfolk arrival, embarkation delayed

Carnival Sunshine in Nassau

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunshine experienced a temporary power outage early Sunday morning as the ship returned to Norfolk, Virginia, prompting a delayed arrival and revised embarkation plans for its next sailing.

According to a guest advisory sent March 1, 2026, the ship “experienced a brief power outage, which was quickly resolved by the ship’s engineers.”

The email explained that, to comply with U.S. Coast Guard requirements, the vessel would be assisted into port by tugboats. This will result in an unplanned delayed arrival in Norfolk by early afternoon.

“This advisory requires your immediate attention as we work to keep you updated about your cruise,” the notice stated.

Passengers currently onboard shared additional details on social media. One guest wrote that the ship “lost power shipwide last night for about an hour,” adding that the captain said the Coast Guard wanted the vessel “guided in by tugs, which are alongside.”

The same passenger noted that projected docking was around 11:30 a.m., though guests were told they could remain in their staterooms until 1:30 p.m.

Another passenger posting to Reddit reported that power, propulsion, and sanitation were lost around 1:55 a.m. on March 1 while the ship was a few nautical miles from the Chesapeake Bay entrance.

“Power went fully out a few times,” the guest wrote, adding that it was restored around 2:45 a.m. Tugboats reportedly arrived later in the morning, and the ship continued sailing under its own power with tugs on standby.

The guest also noted that while some non-essential systems were still experiencing technical issues, crew members continued serving food and operating onboard venues.

“The crew has been great,” the passenger wrote. “They all seem very upset… continuing to serve food, run the bars, casino, and room cleaning during all of this.”

Revised embarkation plans in Norfolk

Because of the delayed arrival, Carnival revised check-in times for guests embarking March 1 in Norfolk. The cruise line advised that once the ship docks, guests from the returning sailing must first clear the terminal and parking areas before new passengers can arrive.

Under the updated schedule, original morning check-in windows between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. were shifted to the afternoon, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The final revised arrival window runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Carnival asked for “full cooperation with this revised embarkation plan,” stating that guests who arrive earlier than their new appointment will be asked to return later. To offset the inconvenience, the cruise line said it will post a US$25 per person onboard credit to guests’ Sail & Sign accounts to cover the cost of lunch.

“In preparation for departure, all guests must be at the cruise terminal no later than 6:30 PM,” the advisory added. Dinner will be served with open seating in the main dining rooms and at the Lido Marketplace, and an announcement will be made when staterooms are ready.

The incident occurred aboard Carnival Sunshine during an 8-day round-trip Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed Norfolk on February 21, 2026. The itinerary includes:

February 21: Depart Norfolk, Virginia

February 24: Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Carnival’s private island)

February 25: Grand Turk Island, Turks and Caicos

February 26: Puerto Plata (Amber Cove), Dominican Republic

March 1: Arrive Norfolk, Virginia

The ship was originally scheduled to arrive in Norfolk at 8:00 a.m. on March 1.

A reminder of Carnival’s infamous “poop cruise”

Carnival Triumph stranded at sea

Whenever sanitation and power disruptions are mentioned on a Carnival ship, many cruisers recall the infamous 2013 incident aboard Carnival Triumph, often referred to as the “poop cruise.”

In that case, an engine room fire knocked out power to the vessel in the Gulf of Mexico, disabling air conditioning, refrigeration, and many sanitation systems. With limited working toilets and challenging conditions onboard, the ship drifted for days before being towed to port. The incident received widespread media coverage and led to significant operational and public relations repercussions for Carnival Cruise Line.

The situation aboard Carnival Sunshine appears markedly different. According to Carnival’s advisory, the outage was brief and “quickly resolved by the ship’s engineers.” Passengers reported that while some non-essential systems experienced intermittent issues, food service, bars, and housekeeping continued operating, and the ship was able to sail under its own power with tugboats on standby.
