Viking Cruise passengers urged back to ship amid unrest in Belfast

A Viking cruise passenger says he received an unexpected call to return to his ship while visiting Belfast this week as authorities prepared for additional unrest following several nights of violence across Northern Ireland.

The guest shared his experience in a Facebook group for Viking Cruises British Isles Explorer sailings after what began as a routine day ashore turned into a race back to the ship.

According to the Viking cruiser, he and his travel companions had gone independently to visit Titanic Belfast when they received a phone call from their Viking ship advising them to return as soon as possible.

“We went out to see the Titanic Experience and received a phone call a few hours later to return to the ship as soon as possible since the authorities were expecting further civil disturbances,” the passenger wrote.

The warning came as Belfast remained on edge following several days of unrest that erupted after a stabbing attack earlier this week. Police have since maintained an increased presence across Northern Ireland amid concerns that additional demonstrations and disorder could occur.

Unrest in Belfast impacted public transportation

Because of the unrest and transportation disruptions across Belfast, getting back to the cruise port proved challenging for some passengers exploring the city independently. According to the passenger, public transportation services had been suspended, leaving limited options for returning to the ship.

“All public transportation was shut down and we had a lot of difficulty getting a taxi to get back to the ship on time,” he said.

As the group worked to secure transportation, staff at Titanic Belfast stepped in to help arrange a car back to the port. The assistance allowed them to make it back before the ship’s scheduled departure.

At the same time, the passenger said Viking was preparing a contingency plan in case the transportation arrangement fell through. After contacting the ship directly, he was told that a shuttle could be rerouted to pick them up if needed, providing additional reassurance as they worked to return to the vessel.

The passenger said the experience served as a reminder to keep a working cellphone on hand while exploring independently and to save the ship’s contact information in case of an emergency.

“So two gentle reminders — always keep your phone ready in case the ship is alerting you and note the ship’s phone number which is on your cabin keycard in case you need to reach them directly.”

The post quickly drew responses from other Viking passengers, some of whom reported encountering similar situations during recent sailings. One traveler said a Viking excursion in Dublin was cut short approximately six weeks ago due to developing circumstances ashore.

“Happened to us in Dublin 6 weeks ago. Thank goodness we were on a Viking excursion. We were turned around very quickly,” the commenter wrote.

Others said the incident reinforced their preference for cruise line-sponsored shore excursions, which allow cruise operators to communicate and coordinate directly with guests during unexpected events.

Belfast has experienced several days of unrest across the city, prompting an increased police presence and transportation disruptions across parts of the city.

The disturbances followed a stabbing incident earlier in the week and led to protests, road closures, and scattered incidents of violence in some neighborhoods. Authorities responded by increasing security measures, deploying additional officers, and urging residents and visitors to avoid affected areas.

Reports from local media showed damaged vehicles, fires, and disruptions to public transportation services. Police also used water cannons during some of the demonstrations as they worked to maintain public order.

Government officials have repeatedly called for calm and condemned the violence, while police have maintained an elevated presence throughout Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland.
