Guests booked aboard Norwegian Sun are being warned that additional itinerary changes may be on the horizon as the ship continues operating at reduced speed due to an ongoing technical issue.

The latest update comes just days after Norwegian Cruise Line adjusted Norwegian Sun’s current Baltic itinerary due to ongoing technical issues that have forced the ship to operate at reduced speed. Now, passengers booked on the upcoming July 3, 2026 sailing have been advised that additional itinerary changes may be necessary while repairs continue.

In a letter sent to booked guests, Norwegian Cruise Line said the ship is still operating at a reduced speed due to a technical issue, but emphasized that safety is not affected.

According to the cruise line, repair plans have already been identified and work is currently underway. However, Norwegian warned that completing those repairs may require Norwegian Sun to remain overnight in Copenhagen, Denmark, after embarking guests on July 3.

If that happens, the ship’s scheduled visit to Oslo, Norway on July 4 could be canceled.

“Norwegian Sun may need to extend the ship’s stay in Copenhagen, Denmark to include an overnight on July 3, which could impact our scheduled visit to Oslo, Norway on July 4,” the letter states.

The cruise line stressed that no final decision has been made and promised to provide guests with another update as soon as additional information becomes available.

Oslo has not yet been canceled

At this time, Norwegian Cruise Line says the itinerary remains unchanged. However, the company is preparing guests for the possibility that Oslo could be removed if additional repair time is required in Copenhagen.

If that occurs, Norwegian said it plans to offer guests a variety of shore excursion options in Copenhagen so they can enjoy the extra time in the Danish capital.

The cruise line acknowledged that guests look forward to each destination and said it appreciates passengers’ patience while its teams finalize repair plans.

Some passengers on Norwegian Sun’s current sailing criticized the cruise line’s handling of the situation after itinerary changes were announced only after embarkation. Several guests said they would have appreciated knowing about the ship’s technical issues and the potential for itinerary disruptions before boarding.

The latest communication suggests Norwegian Cruise Line may be trying to avoid a repeat of that criticism. Rather than waiting until guests are already onboard, the company is now warning passengers ahead of embarkation that additional itinerary changes remain possible while repairs continue.

Norwegian Sun is scheduled to operate Northern European itineraries through October 2026 before repositioning to the U.S.

The new warning follows a string of itinerary changes that have affected Norwegian Sun in recent weeks. The ship is currently sailing at reduced speed due to an ongoing technical issue, forcing Norwegian Cruise Line to revise multiple European itineraries.

Norwegian Sun’s itinerary disruptions first surfaced during the ship’s June 15 Baltic sailing, when passengers reported the vessel was experiencing propulsion-related issues. The ship’s scheduled June 22 visit to Stockholm (via Nynäshamn) was canceled and replaced with a day at sea after guests were informed the ship was dealing with mechanical problems.

At the time, Norwegian Cruise Line had not publicly confirmed the issue, and passengers later reported the vessel was operating at reduced speed.

The technical issue continued to affect the following June 24 sailing, when Norwegian Cruise Line officially notified guests that the ship’s reduced speed would require itinerary changes. The revised schedule included adjusted visits to Copenhagen, Kiel, and Warnemünde, while Gdynia, Poland, was replaced with a call to Rønne, Denmark.

In total, the technical issue has impacted two consecutive Baltic sailings, resulting in canceled ports, revised arrival and departure times, shorter port visits, and substitute destinations.

Although Norwegian has not publicly identified the exact nature of the technical issue, the continued speed restrictions suggest repairs are still ongoing.

Could more Norwegian Sun sailings be impacted?

This latest notification indicates the cruise line is still evaluating how long repairs will take.

While the July 3 sailing has not yet been modified, Norwegian’s decision to alert guests in advance suggests the company is trying to provide as much notice as possible while repair work continues.

Whether additional itineraries beyond early July will be affected remains unclear.

For now, guests booked on upcoming Norwegian Sun cruises may want to monitor their email closely, as Norwegian Cruise Line says further updates will be shared once repair plans are finalized.

Candid Cruise & Travel will continue following Norwegian Sun closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
