What to wear on Mediterranean Cruise in October: Outfit and Packing Guide

Cruise outfit ideas for October Mediterranean - Allie Hubers in Santorini

I’ve sailed around the Mediterranean during the fall multiple times, and October is one of the best times of year to visit the region. You’ll find significantly fewer crowds compared to summer across the Mediterranean, temperatures are far more comfortable for sightseeing, and cruise ports feel less chaotic.

While evenings can be a little chilly, especially by the water, daytime weather is often ideal for exploring the ports of call. Countries like Italy and Greece are especially comfortable in October, typically offering relief from the heat you’ll find in the peak summer months.

Back in October 2022, I spent 12 nights aboard Royal Caribbean‘s Odyssey of the Seas, sailing from Rome to Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. Our cruise departed in late October and concluded the first week of November.

Before the cruise, I also spent four days in Paris, France, which was noticeably cooler and rainier than the Mediterranean ports that followed. Because of that, most of my packing was focused on the cruise itself, with a few strategic layers added for cooler destinations and evenings.

October weather varies across the Mediterranean, but overall it’s one of the most forgiving months to pack for. In general, you can expect minimal humidity compared to summer sailings with comfortably, sunny weather for sightseeing.

If you’re curious about what you should pack for your Mediterranean cruise in October, you’ve come to the right place! I’ve compiled an outfit guide for everything that I wore during my Mediterranean cruise. In addition, I’ve provided some packing tips for how you can best prepare for your cruise.

Mediterranean Cruise Outfits in October by Port

I will say: I am not a fashionista, by any means! I prefer packing comfortable, versatile outfits that can be worn both aboard and ashore while cruising. For any cruise, it’s important to pack strategically so you don’t waste space in your luggage.

Here’s what I wore each day of our October Mediterranean cruise, along with outfit examples from my mom, dad, and sister. Hopefully, this can give you a realistic idea of what to wear and pack for a Mediterranean cruise in October.

Rome

For Rome, everyone was dressed comfortably for a full day of sightseeing in mild October weather. Our outfits were casual and practical, with lightweight fabrics that worked well for walking and standing around historic sites.

We didn’t want to be too dressy, but my sister and I prefer wearing dresses or rompers for these sightseeing days. In Rome, when daytime temperatures in October can be warm and sunny, but we didn’t feel hot, even while you’re on your feet for hours at a time.

I also wore my crossbody purse in Rome, and always made sure to have it on the front versus behind me. Pick-pocketing is a huge issue in Italy, so prepare accordingly!

Cyprus

We visited Cyprus for the first time during this cruise and explored the city by foot. The port was conveniently located in the city, making it easy to explore independently. Cyprus was warm and sunny, making it one of the easiest ports to dress for. I wore white linen shorts paired with a breathable white tank and white tennis shoes.

My sister opted for shorts and a purple tank top, while my parents leaned into lightweight, practical outfits.

My mom wore mid-length shorts that were almost capri-length with a casual top, and my dad dressed similarly for comfort in the heat.

Israel

Israel was the warmest destination on our itinerary, especially during our Masada excursion. On our first day in Jerusalem, I wore a flowy skirt with a black top.

If you’re visiting religious sights during your Mediterranean cruise, be sure to pack clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Many churches require modest clothing, and I have been turned away from entering because I didn’t meet the dress code.

For our first day in Israel, my sister chose a long blue dress with short sleeves, while my mom wore a casual top with black capris. In addition, my dad wore cargo pants and a dry-fit Nike shirt for the heat. If your itinerary visits Turkey, you can anticipate similar hot climates in October.

For Masada, we prioritized outfits that would be cool enough for the hot sun, but still having some protection. I wore black shorts, a white tank, and a lightweight gauze button-down to protect my shoulders.

My sister wore khaki shorts with a striped tank, while my parents stuck to tanks, shorts, and breathable fabrics.

On our third day, my sister wore a coral pink long dress with short sleeves. Because we were visiting multiple churches this day, having shoulders and knees covered with the biggest concern. I thought this outfit was so cute on her!

Personally, I opted for a black mid-length dress layered with a white shirt underneath. Every day, I wore white tennis shoes that matched my outfit, but they were still very comfortable for walking.

My mom again wore capris and a short-sleeve top, and my dad returned to cargo pants with a short-sleeved shirt. They both sported their favorite fanny packs for this excursion, along with drawstring bags for waters and snacks.

If you’re cruising further east like this, such as places across Turkey, you’ll want to prepare for warmer weather with humid climate. However, the weather was still comfortable!

Rhodes

This was our first time visiting Rhodes, so we were excited to walk around the quaint port area. Again, our ship docked right in the city so we independently walked around, shopped, and visited the city’s popular sights.

The weather was warm, sunny, and extremely comfortable. I wore a short-sleeve black sundress with white tennis shoes.

My sister chose a yellow romper with shorts, while my mom wore athletic shorts and a pink workout top. My dad wore black shorts and a green t-shirt for an easy, casual outfit.

Santorini

One of the most popular Mediterranean ports is Santorini, Greece! We booked an excursion that visited the picturesque town of Oia (the famous village with blue-domed rooftops), along with a winery and Fira.

Our visit was another sunny, warm day without the oppressive humidity often found in summer. This can be one of the hottest Mediterranean ports in the summer, but October is very comfortable.

Us girls prioritized wearing blue today to match the island’s vibe, just for fun! My mom wore a blue shirt layered with a blue cardigan and a black skort. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that my dad wore cargo shorts and a t-shirt, again!

My sister paired some blue shorts with a lightweight dressy top, while I wore a matching blue gauze set with shorts and a button-down top. These outfits were very cute for photos while still being comfortable for walking around. The wind was a little chilly on the tender ride back, so it might be worthwhile to bring a light sweater.

Crete

Another port on our itinerary was Crete, which we had visited before. Again, we walked around the city area and enjoying the beautiful weather and shopping along the shore. Crete had similar weather to the Greek Isles overall, with a warm and sunny climate.

I opted for a white romper, while my sister wore black shorts with a blue tank top. Light, breathable outfits worked perfectly for the day!

Dinner Outfit Ideas for Mediterranean October Cruise

Royal Caribbean is fairly casual, so we were never too dressy for dinner. Evenings onboard were relaxed and laid-back with dinner and entertainment after a busy day of exploring.

Almost every night, I wore either a dress or a romper to dinner. Because October temperatures were cooler and I wasn’t sweating during the day, some dresses pulled double duty and were worn both in port and at dinner. If you’re short on luggage space, you could always plan to wear outfits during the day and night!

I only packed a few dresses that I wore exclusively in the evening, as I didn’t want to waste luggage space on evening attire. We had a couple formal evenings, but nothing was every too dressy.

Each night, dad typically wore shorts or dress pants with a polo, while my mom alternated between dresses with a cardigan or capris paired with a dressy top. My sister also wore a dress nearly every night, keeping her packing simple and versatile.

I would absolutely recommend bringing a light sweater that you can wear to dinner. We never needed an actual jacket, but it was cooler in the evenings. If you’re someone who likes to be outside often, you might want to pack a few sweaters.

What is the weather like for a Mediterranean cruise in October?

October Mediterranean Cruise Outfit Ideas Women

October is considered shoulder-season across the Mediterranean, and it’s my favorite time of year to visit this region. Temperatures are lower than summer, humidity drops significantly, and weather tends to be more predictable, though regional differences still matter.

Italy and Greece typically see daytime highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s°F, with cooler evenings in the low 60s. Spain stays warmer into October, especially in the south, while France cools off more quickly and sees more rain. Eastern Mediterranean ports like Cyprus and Turkey can still feel quite warm, particularly for inland excursions.

Overall, October weather is comfortable for cruising, especially while exploring the ports of call. Laying is still important, and evenings onboard can be chilly. However, you are likely to find really pleasant weather with fewer crowds across the Mediterranean in October!
