Passengers aboard Celebrity Infinity reported a shipwide power outage early Sunday morning while the vessel was positioned off the coast of Piraeus, Greece. The outage left the ship without running water, functioning toilets, or air conditioning.

According to multiple posts on social media, the outage on Celebrity Infinity began around 3 a.m. ship time. One passenger posted about the developing situation on Facebook:

“Emergency right now on Celebrity Infinity off the coast of Greece. The ship has lost all power since 3am (50 minutes ago) and is currently dead in the water. Tug boats have raced over to hold us in position. No electric in the rooms, air con off, toilets off, WiFi off. Bravo Bravo Bravo announcement over the ship wide speaker system.”

In a separate post within the sailing’s dedicated Facebook group, another passenger said they were awakened in the middle of the night when their cabin became warm due to the loss of air conditioning.

The passenger reported, “Power outage while off the coast of Piraeus (Athens)! Off since 3am, woke up because it got stuffy – no air con, no running water, no lights, no wifi, no elevators. Saw some tugboats coming over, no ETA on fix.”

UPDATE (2/15): Celebrity Cruises has canceled the February 16, 2026, sailing.

Tug assistance and “not under command” status

Multiple commenters noted that Celebrity Infinity was displaying a status of “not under command” while off the coast of Athens. In maritime terms, that designation indicates a vessel is unable to maneuver as required, often due to mechanical or propulsion-related issues.

In addition, commenters monitored marine tracking data that appeared to show tugboats assisting the Celebrity vessel and moving it slowly toward port at just over four knots. One commenter wrote, “Looks like you are being towed by CHRISTOS XXX and VERNICOS MASTER at a steady 4.1 knots. The port estimates you will arrive about 10:30. Stay safe!”

Passengers onboard confirmed that emergency lighting was active in common areas but that services in cabins were limited. One guest wrote, “No power, water, or toilet flushes. Hopefully now that we’re at port they can get basic power restored.”

When one person questioned if the post was fake, someone responded, “Not a fake story. I’m on this very ship, this very moment and only emergency lights are on in the common areas. They did announce Bravo Bravo Bravo at around 3am ship time.”

Current itinerary and position near Athens

The timing of the power outage is particularly concerning, as Celebrity Infinity recently resumed service following a scheduled nine-day drydock in Marseille, France.

According to Cruise Industry News, the ship began its current 13-day repositioning cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean on February 3, 2026, shortly after completing the work in France.

During the drydock, the Millennium-class vessel underwent routine maintenance, technical upgrades, certification, and survey inspections ahead of its 25th year in service.

Celebrity Infinity is scheduled to conclude the voyage on February 16, 2026, in Athens, Greece.

The itinerary included calls in Messina, Valletta, Heraklion, Rhodes, Kusadasi, Thessaloniki, and Nafplio before the planned arrival in Athens. Marine tracking images shared by passengers placed the ship just outside the port of Piraeus, south of Athens, when power was lost.

As of publication, Celebrity Cruises has not issued a public statement regarding the cause of the outage. There have been no reports of injuries in passenger accounts.

Celebrity cancels February 16 sailing

In a letter sent to booked guests, the cruise line confirmed that the cancellation was necessary to allow additional time for technical assessments and repairs.

“During our previous voyage, the ship experienced a technical issue and while our experts have been working diligently, we need additional time to complete necessary assessments and repairs,” the letter states. “After carefully considering all options, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the February 16th, 2026, sailing.”

The impacted voyage was scheduled to sail round-trip from Piraeus, Greece, as part of the ship’s Eastern Mediterranean deployment.

Compensation and guest options

Celebrity Cruises is offering affected guests a full refund of any paid portion of their cruise fare, including non-refundable deposits and prepaid amenities, returned to the original form of payment.

In addition, guests will receive a Future Cruise Credit worth 100 percent of the cruise fare paid, valid for any Celebrity Cruises sailing within the next year. The credit will be emailed within 14 days.

For travelers who booked flights through Flights by Celebrity, the cruise line said its team will contact guests with updated travel arrangements. Guests who booked air independently may contact their carrier for assistance and will be reimbursed for change fees up to $200 per person for domestic travel or $400 per person for international travel.

Celebrity also stated it will reimburse up to two nights of hotel accommodations at up to $300 per night, along with a $100 per guest per day credit for up to two days to help cover incidental expenses. Refunds are expected to be processed automatically within 14 business days.

Previous power issues on Celebrity Infinity

Cruise ship wake

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Celebrity Infinity has experienced power-related issues in the past year.

In July 2025, Celebrity Infinity experienced an electrical fire while docked in Kusadasi, Turkey, reportedly in an engine room or switchboard area. The incident caused a complete power blackout that left cabins without electricity, air conditioning, elevators, and communications for several hours during high temperatures.

Although power was eventually restored, additional technical issues were discovered during overnight testing, forcing the ship to remain in port and cancel scheduled calls to Mykonos and Kavala.

Frustrated passengers described chaotic disembarkation scenes, with hundreds opting to leave the ship independently and travel by ferry to nearby Greek islands.

The recurrence of electrical or propulsion-related problems will likely raise questions among passengers with upcoming sailings, particularly those monitoring reliability ahead of future Mediterranean departures.

    Currently onboard Infinity, 10am
Since shortly the toilets work, but still total power blackout. 3 tugs are pushing the ship against the pier as the winches of course do not work for mooring. No warm or hot coffee, food just sandwiches. Ship happens, but the public announceme t by the capt is outrages. The issue continues since 8 hrs and only at 7am he announced a technical problem. Nothing more since than. If that is Celebritys protocol- good night.
Rumors say the electrical switchboard burned, but who knows whats wrong and for how long. As they have never announced that toilets flush again, passengers are still asking where they can do their business. All in all very poorly handled by the captain. Communication is nil

Hi. We just got off the infinity just now one day in advance of our planned cruise end. We have been on the ship for the past 25 days on a back to back cruise originating in Barcelona. Yes the power went out in the middle of the night. Emergency lighting only and washroom not.functioning. we got dressed and went on deck. The staff were all woken and at their posts. They had a limited breakfast and water stations. We remained in the solarium to see the plans we many passwngers continued with their shore excursions for the day. The washrooms in common areas were functioning. The staff were all caring for guest comfort and regular updates. A few hours later guests were invited to depart a day early when rh compensation for day missed and assistance with hotel bookings and flight changes if needed and offers to cover these costs. We are currently in a taxi on route to hotel that we booked through celebrity for tonight at which time we will.make our planned flights. Something to note when we returned to our cabin to.pack our room attendant had MADE UP AND Cleaned OUR CABIN in the DARK! THAT IS DEDICATION. THANKS ADI!!!! other staff carried our luggage down the stairs so as to help us. That is great service. We wish the ship and her crew well.
