Southampton Cruise Port is located in Hampshire, England, and welcomes more than 3 million cruise passengers each year. The busy port receives more than 500 cruise calls annually, making Southampton one of the largest cruise hubs in Europe.
The Port of Southampton is home to five passenger terminals: City, Horizon, Mayflower, Ocean and QEII. Major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard and MSC Cruises all sail from Southampton.
In addition, Southampton is conveniently located around 80 miles southwest of London. The port has an excellent network of road and rail connections, making it relatively easy to reach from the city.
I have traveled between London and Southampton for multiple cruises. For me, taking the direct train from London Waterloo has been the easiest option. However, cruisers can also travel by coach, private transfer, taxi or cruise-line shuttle.
The best choice will depend on where you are staying, how much luggage you have and which airport you are using. Here is everything you need to know about traveling from London to Southampton Cruise Port.
Where is Southampton Cruise Port located?
The Port of Southampton is located on the southern coast of England, approximately 80 miles from central London.
Without traffic, the drive between London and Southampton takes around 2 hours. However, traffic around London can significantly increase the journey time, especially during rush hour.
Southampton is a large commercial port used by cruise ships, ferries and cargo vessels. Although all five cruise terminals are located near the city center, they are spread across the Eastern and Western Docks.
Before leaving London, make sure you know which terminal your ship will be using. Do not ask your driver to take you to “Southampton Cruise Port” without providing the specific terminal name.
Terminal assignments can change, even close to embarkation day. Check your cruise documents before traveling and confirm the terminal with your cruise line.
What is the best way to travel from London to Southampton?
There are three primary ways to travel from central London to Southampton Cruise Port: train, coach or private transfer.
For most travelers, the direct train from London Waterloo provides the best combination of speed, convenience and affordability.
The coach is typically the cheapest option, while a private transfer provides the most convenience for families and travelers with substantial luggage.
Taking the train from London to Southampton
The easiest public transportation option is the direct train from London Waterloo to Southampton Central.
South Western Railway operates regular direct trains between the two cities. The average journey takes around 90 minutes, although some services are faster. Travel times can also be longer on weekends and holidays.
Advance tickets can start around $50 USD, while flexible and last-minute fares are more expensive. Prices will vary depending on the travel date and departure time. You can check current fares directly through South Western Railway.
I would purchase tickets in advance and choose an early departure if traveling on embarkation day (around 9:00 A.M). This will provide extra time in case the train is delayed or cancelled.
Weekend engineering work is common on British railways and can sometimes result in replacement buses or longer journeys. Even if you purchased your ticket months in advance, check the schedule again shortly before your cruise.
Also, do not assume you can use the same Oyster card or contactless payment method you used around London. Oyster and contactless bank cards are not currently valid for train journeys to Southampton Central. You will need to purchase a separate railway ticket.
Once you arrive in Southampton, taxis are available on both sides of Southampton Central. A taxi to the cruise port will typically cost less than $15, depending on the terminal and traffic.
Although some terminals are within walking distance, dragging cruise luggage through the city is not necessarily how I want to start my vacation!
Taking a coach from London to Southampton
Traveling by coach is usually the cheapest way to reach Southampton from central London.
National Express operates direct coaches between London Victoria Coach Station and Southampton Coach Station. The fastest journey takes around 2.5 hours, with up to 14 departures offered daily.
Advance fares can start around $10 USD each way, although prices vary by date. Tickets should be booked in advance, especially during the busy summer cruise season. You can check schedules through National Express.
The coach takes longer than the train, but it has dedicated luggage storage. This can make the journey easier for travelers who do not want to maneuver large suitcases through London Waterloo.
However, check the luggage allowance before booking. National Express currently includes one large suitcase weighing up to 20 kilograms, or two medium suitcases, along with one small piece of hand luggage.
Additional luggage can be purchased, but it costs less when added online before your journey. Space for extra bags is also subject to availability. Southampton Coach Station is located near the city center. After arriving, you can take a short taxi ride to the cruise terminal.
Booking a private transfer from London
A private transfer is typically the most expensive option, but it is also the most convenient. The drive from central London to Southampton takes around two hours without traffic. However, congestion can significantly increase the journey time.
For our most recent cruise, we booked a private transfer from London to Southampton through Viator. It was by far the most relaxing way we have traveled between London and the cruise port.
Our driver was extremely professional and picked us up directly from our London hotel. We did not need to navigate a busy train station, carry our suitcases through London or find a taxi after arriving in Southampton.
The vehicle was very comfortable, and our driver dropped us off right outside the cruise terminal. The entire experience was seamless from start to finish.
Although the private transfer cost more than taking the train or coach, the convenience was worthwhile for us. We could relax during the drive without worrying about luggage, train delays or making additional connections.
Private transfers can be especially worthwhile for families or groups who can divide the cost. This option is also convenient for travelers with mobility concerns or substantial luggage.
Transfers should be booked in advance. You can arrange one through Viator, another online tour provider, a local transportation company or your hotel concierge.
Some private transfers also include stops at popular attractions like Windsor Castle or Stonehenge. This can be a convenient way to add sightseeing while traveling between London and Southampton.
Should you travel from London on embarkation day?
If you are already staying in London, traveling to Southampton on embarkation day is relatively easy. The direct train takes around 90 minutes, so you do not necessarily need to spend the night in Southampton.
However, I would choose an early train and leave plenty of extra time for unexpected delays. Do not book a train that is scheduled to arrive shortly before the cruise ship’s all-aboard time.
If you are flying internationally, especially a long-haul flight, I would not recommend landing in London on the morning of your cruise. Flight delays, long immigration lines or missing luggage could cause you to miss the ship.
Instead, fly to England at least two days before your cruise, as this allows for any potential disruptions. You can spend the night in London or continue directly to Southampton.
For me, spending a few days in London before the cruise is the best option. London is one of my favorite cities in Europe, and adding a pre-cruise stay makes the vacation feel like two trips in one!
How do you travel from Heathrow Airport to Southampton?
Heathrow Airport is the most common arrival point for international travelers. The airport is located west of London, approximately 65 miles from Southampton Cruise Port.
Travelers can choose between a coach, cruise-line shuttle, taxi, Uber or private transfer.
There is no convenient direct train between Heathrow Airport and Southampton. Traveling by rail requires multiple connections and can take substantially longer than using a coach or private transfer.
National Express operates direct coaches from Heathrow to Southampton Coach Station. The fastest journey takes around 1 hour and 25 minutes from Terminal 5, with fares starting around $20 USD.
Services are also available from Heathrow Central Bus Station, which serves Terminals 2 and 3. Check the current route and fares through National Express. This is one of the most affordable options for travelers arriving at Heathrow. After reaching Southampton Coach Station, you can take a short taxi ride to the cruise port.
A private transfer can be more convenient for a group, like this tour from Viator. Depending on the vehicle and company, a van for approximately four travelers with luggage can cost around $250. Of course, prices will vary based on traffic, vehicle size and travel date.
Cruise lines might also offer transfers from Heathrow to Southampton. These can cost around $100 per person, although prices vary by cruise line.
While these transfers are more expensive than the public coach, some travelers appreciate having transportation arranged directly through the cruise line.
How do you travel from Gatwick Airport to Southampton?
Gatwick Airport is located approximately 90 miles from Southampton. The drive typically takes around two hours, although traffic can make the journey much longer.
Travelers can take a train, coach or private transfer from Gatwick to Southampton’s Cruise Port.
The train journey takes around two hours, depending on the connection, and requires at least one stop. Check the route carefully before booking, especially if you are traveling with luggage.
National Express also operates coaches between Gatwick Airport and Southampton. The fastest current journey takes around three hours, with advance fares starting near £24.40. You can check current availability through National Express.
Because Gatwick is further from Southampton than Heathrow, I would leave plenty of time for the journey. If possible, avoid arriving at Gatwick on the morning of embarkation.
Can you fly directly into Southampton?
Southampton Airport is another option, especially for travelers arriving from elsewhere in the United Kingdom or Northern Europe.
The airport serves destinations including Amsterdam, Dublin, Edinburgh, Belfast, Paris, Geneva and Glasgow. Current airlines include Aer Lingus, Aurigny, easyJet, KLM, Loganair and TUI.
Routes can be seasonal, so check the Southampton Airport schedule before booking. Southampton Airport is located close to the cruise port. A taxi ride takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic and which terminal your ship is using.
Another option is taking the train from Southampton Airport Parkway to Southampton Central. The railway station is located only steps from the airport terminal, and direct trains operate regularly. Once you arrive at Southampton Central, you can take a taxi to the cruise terminal.
Flying directly into Southampton can be easier than navigating London, but international flight options are limited. The airport is most convenient for travelers arriving from other cities in the United Kingdom or nearby European destinations.
Southampton has five cruise terminals
The Port of Southampton has five passenger terminals: City, Horizon, Mayflower, Ocean and QEII.
The current terminal addresses are:
- City Cruise Terminal, Berth 101: Solent Road, Southampton, SO15 1HJ
- Horizon Cruise Terminal, Berth 102: West Bay Road, Southampton, SO15 1AW
- Mayflower Cruise Terminal, Berth 106: Herbert Walker Avenue, Southampton, SO15 0GN
- Ocean Cruise Terminal, Berth 46/47: Cunard Road, Southampton, SO14 3QN
- QEII Cruise Terminal, Berth 38/39: Test Road, Southampton, SO14 3GG
The port publishes a live cruise schedule with each ship’s expected terminal assignment. However, the schedule is provisional and can change because of weather, tides and operational needs.

City and Horizon Cruise Terminals
City and Horizon are located in the Western Docks near Southampton Central. Horizon is Southampton’s newest cruise terminal. It opened in 2021 following a $55 million investment and can accommodate some of the largest ships visiting the United Kingdom.
The official walking estimate from Southampton Central to Horizon is around 12 minutes. City is also approximately a 15-minute walk from the station.
For the easiest pedestrian route, exit Southampton Central on the southern side of the station. Bus service directly into the Western Docks is limited. Although walking is possible, I would still take a taxi with cruise luggage. A short taxi ride should cost less than $10 and can drop you directly outside the terminal.
Drivers should follow signage for Dock Gate 10 and the specific cruise terminal.
Ocean and Mayflower Cruise Terminals
Ocean and Mayflower are both located around a 25- to 30-minute walk from Southampton Central. With luggage, I would take a taxi. The port is a busy industrial area, and the most direct pedestrian route might not be obvious.
Mayflower Cruise Terminal is located in the Western Docks and has shore-power capabilities for compatible cruise ships. Ocean is located in the Eastern Docks closer to QEII. Drivers should follow the signs for the specific terminal and dock gate rather than relying only on the postcode.
QEII Cruise Terminal
QEII is located in the Eastern Docks and is the furthest terminal from Southampton Central. If you arrive by train, you will likely want to take a taxi. The terminal is too far from the station for most travelers to walk comfortably with cruise luggage.
Drivers should follow the A33 toward Platform Road and use Dock Gate 4. This area can become congested during busy embarkation times, so allocate additional time.
Can you park at Southampton Cruise Port?
Parking is available for passengers departing from all five Southampton cruise terminals. However, you should reserve parking in advance, especially during the busy summer cruise season.

CPS provides official parking for Cunard, P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises. This is a valet-style service that allows passengers to drop off their vehicle near the terminal before it is moved to a secure parking area. Reservations can be made through CPS.
Parking prices vary based on the cruise length, terminal and sailing date. Spaces can sell out, so I would not wait until embarkation day to make a reservation. Southampton also has several long-stay city parking garages. However, you will need to arrange transportation from the garage to the cruise terminal.
Should you stay overnight in Southampton?
It is not necessary to stay overnight in Southampton if you are already visiting London. The direct train makes it relatively easy to travel to the port on embarkation day. Additionally, the drive only takes a couple hours from London to Southampton, depending on traffic.
However, spending the night in Southampton can make the morning of your cruise less stressful. This is especially true if your ship has an early check-in time or you are traveling with children and substantial luggage.
Southampton’s city center has plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops and pubs. Several hotels are located near Southampton Central and the Western Docks. Staying overnight also gives you time to explore the city’s maritime history before boarding your cruise.
What is there to do in Southampton?
While many travelers arrive in Southampton to board their cruise ship, the city has more to offer than most cruisers realize. Southampton has a long history as one of Europe’s largest passenger ports. Most famously, Titanic departed from Southampton on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912.
SeaCity Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to Southampton’s connection with Titanic. The museum includes historic artifacts, passenger stories and an interactive model of the ship. You can find current hours and tickets through SeaCity Museum.
Titanic history buffs can also visit the White Star Tavern and The Grapes, which both have connections to Southampton’s maritime history.
Another option is walking along Southampton’s medieval town walls. Substantial portions of the walls still stand throughout the Old Town. Of course, Southampton also has plenty of shopping, restaurants and traditional pubs. You should have no problem finding somewhere to enjoy fish and chips before your cruise!
Can you visit Stonehenge from Southampton?
Stonehenge is located approximately 50 miles northwest of Southampton. The journey typically takes around one hour by car, depending on traffic.
Some cruise lines offer post-cruise excursions to Stonehenge with airport drop-offs at Heathrow or Gatwick. You can also arrange a private transfer that includes Stonehenge before continuing to London or the airport, like this one from Viator.
However, many international flights to the United States depart in the morning or early afternoon. If you have a flight on disembarkation day, you probably will not have enough time to visit Stonehenge. Instead, consider visiting before your cruise or extending your trip by one night.
Traveling independently requires more planning. The closest railway station is in Salisbury, which is approximately 12 miles from Stonehenge. From Salisbury, you will need to take a bus, tour or taxi to the site. Check current visitor information through English Heritage.
