Hallmark takes romance to the high seas in ‘Polar Opposites’

Polar Opposites movie on Hallmark

If you’re looking to escape to a winter wonderland this month, Hallmark’s got you covered. The feel-good movie channel is showcasing brand-new, destination-focused movies this month.

Hallmark’s newest movie, Polar Opposites, follows Emma as she journeys to Antarctica on a luxury cruise ship. In an effort to reach her father, who is currently in Antarctica, Emma embarks on a journey to South America. Shortly after arriving, she encounters unforeseen obstacles and resorts to sneaking onto a luxury cruise ship sailing to Antarctica, earth’s most untouched region.

Of course, Hallmark’s movies always lean heavily into romance, and Polar Opposites is no exception. While sailing on the luxury cruise to Antarctica, Emma meets the handsome ship engineer, Andy. The two embark on an unforgettable love journey in Antarctica, chronicling their blossoming romance onboard the luxury cruise vessel.

Polar Opposites stars Rhiannon Fish as Emma, alongside Markian Tarasiuk as her love interest, Andy. The film was directed by John Bradshaw and written by Anna White. In addition Maeve Quinlan stars as Peg and Dean McDermott as Ian.

Polar Opposites was filmed in early 2024 and wrapped a few months later. The movie was filmed entirely in South America, although the crew did not actually venture to the Antarctic region. Filming locations for Polar Opposites included Ushuaia, Argentina and Patagonia. The stunning scenery of Argentina is the backdrop for Hallmark’s latest romance film.

Hallmark’s Polar Opposite premieres on January 11, 2025, at 8 p.m. Eastern time on the Hallmark Channel.

If you’re looking for more cruise-themed movies from Hallmark, you should consider watching the Love on the Danube trilogy. The three movies were filmed by Hallmark onboard Emerald River Cruise and exclusively released to Hallmark’s streaming platform, Hallmark +.

Can you go to Antarctica on a cruise ship?

Although Emma and Andy’s love doesn’t actually take place on a luxury cruise to Antarctica, you can find many options for cruising to the continent.

Mainstream cruise lines offer “drive-by” sailings through the Antarctic region while smaller ships allow guests to go ashore. Expedition ships and smaller luxury cruise ships sail to Antarctica each year, braving the dangerous Drake Passage to reach the uncharted territory.
