Disembarkation aboard Norwegian Escape turned chaotic this morning as passengers faced hours-long delays at the Port of New Orleans. Unfortunately, guests reported the situation escalated into a physical altercation near the exit scanners, according to multiple posts circulating on Facebook and Reddit.
The incident happened on November 15, 2025 as Norwegian Escape was returning from a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise to New Orleans. Multiple passengers onboard shared the frustrating and chaotic experience online, including detailed reports on Reddit and Facebook.

For some, the incident adds to growing concern about repeated disembarkation issues affecting Norwegian Escape’s weekly turnaround at the Port of New Orleans.
Norwegian Escape departed New Orleans, Louisiana on November 8, 2025 for the 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary. The sailing included ports of call in Cozumel, Roatán, Harvest Caye, and Costa Maya.
Disembarkation delays created immediate congestion

Passengers said the trouble began immediately after the ship docked later than scheduled. The delayed arrival compressed an already tight timeline and pushed thousands of guests into the terminal at once.
Several cruisers described the scene as an unstructured rush, with guests ignoring color-coded luggage tags and crowding stairwells and hallways.
One traveler who shared a detailed firsthand account on Reddit called the system a “free for all” that created severe bottlenecks and left people standing shoulder to shoulder with little direction from staff.
Other passengers on Facebook supported this description, saying they experienced the exact same situation in recent weeks while disembarking in New Orleans. Many echoed the frustration of long lines, slow movement, and terminal congestion that made it impossible to tell where lines began or ended.

Many said they waited hours to move a few feet, while others reported missing transfers or flights due to the delays. Several noted that elderly passengers in line appeared overheated or overwhelmed by the crowding.
Alongside the congestion, emotions reportedly ran high during the ordeal. One cruiser posted on the Norwegian Escape Facebook page calling out guests who took their frustration out on workers.
The cruiser wrote that frontline staff “don’t get paid nearly enough to deal with y’all yelling at them over things they have absolutely no control over.”
Another passenger responded to the thread, adding that the lines “didn’t move smoothly or quickly for far majority of people” and described the atmosphere as “a complete mess”, but emphasized that yelling at staff did not help the situation.
Altercation erupts near the exit on Norwegian Escape

The most alarming moment occurred roughly ten feet from the terminal exit, where the final scanning stations were located.
According to the Reddit report, a young man in the crowd became agitated and began verbally attacking another passenger. Witnesses said he shouted aggressively and the situation escalated quickly. The cruiser shared:
“To add to the drama, I got to see my first fight in a while. About 10 feet from the exit, and where you scan to leave the door, a young man started imploding on everyone around him. He was verbally assaulting one man (“I’m right here, let’s fight” kind of language, though much more colorful).”
When a lone security guard stepped in, the man fled toward the exit but ended up pushed back by the crowd outside.
The confrontation continued outside the building, where the guest reportedly began fighting with the same guard. No additional security staff or supervisors appeared to intervene immediately, according to witnesses.
Though the situation was eventually brought under control, passengers said the lack of available staff made the encounter feel far more dangerous than it needed to be.

According to the passenger who reported the fight, only one security guard, two crew members scanning guests out, and one assistant cruise director were visible during the incident.
While guests praised the assistant cruise director for stepping in and shielding other passengers during the outburst, many questioned why so few employees were present during the busiest part of the turnaround process. With Norwegian Escape carrying thousands of passengers, the limited staffing raised significant safety concerns.
Some NCL cruisers expressed frustration that once the cruise ended, guest safety seemed to receive less attention, especially at a point when tensions were high and order was needed.
A pattern repeating week after week in New Orleans

What happened this weekend does not appear to be an isolated event. Passengers from earlier Norwegian Escape sailings, including cruises that returned on October 25 and November 1, reported almost identical disembarkation experiences.
Many described severe congestion, multi-hour waits, missed flights, and minimal crowd control inside the terminal.
Some said the port simply isn’t equipped to handle a ship of Norwegian Escape’s size, which is one of the cruise line’s largest vessels. Others criticized the cruise line for poor communication and lack of clear procedures to maintain order onboard. A growing number of cruisers now say they would avoid sailing out of New Orleans altogether until the situation improves.
In late October 2025, Norwegian Escape’s disembarkation was even delayed for seven hours when returning to New Orleans. Guests aboard reported online that the delay was caused by the Coast Guard and delays with entering the port.
TikTok user @mandythecruiseplanner discussed the chaotic situation in the video below:
One Reddit user shared, “Everyone’s missing flights that have bag tags because they won’t be off [until] at least 2 likely. Guest services line is crazy, this line is crazy. Wonder what they are going to do, if anything, for the crazy amount of flights that are going to be missed. Also they shut the buffet down after breakfast and won’t reopen.”
The delayed disembarkation also caused a domino effect for the next sailing that was scheduled to embark. One of the impacted passengers replied:
“Yeah it was a HOT MESS. We arrived at 11:30 for a 12-12:30 check-in. We didn’t get onboard until 7:45pm. I’ve been on many cruises and this was the first time I’ve ever seen something this bad. It was chaos. People getting off people blocking buses. And no one was in charge of making it safe. People were passing out from the heat and standing in line for MANY hours.”
Who’s at fault: Norwegian or New Orleans port?

Passengers are divided on where the breakdown begins. Some believe the Port of New Orleans has inadequate infrastructure and staffing for the Norwegian Escape’s size. Others argue that Norwegian Cruise Line needs stricter control over passenger flow, better communication, and more security on the ground.
A few pointed out that guest behavior contributes to the congestion, specifically those who ignore assigned times and rush the exits.
However, everyone agrees that the current process is not working. The combination of late docking, large crowds, unclear procedures, and limited supervision has created an environment where small frustrations can quickly escalate into unsafe situations.
About Norwegian Escape

Norwegian Escape is one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway-Plus–class ships and remains one of the largest vessels in NCL’s fleet.
Debuting in 2015, the 164,600-gross-ton ship can carry just over 4,200 guests at double occupancy and more than 5,000 passengers when fully booked, making smooth embarkation and disembarkation days especially important.
Because of its size and popularity, Norwegian Escape often sails at full capacity, particularly on seasonal Caribbean itineraries. High passenger volume can create operational challenges during port turnaround days, especially in homeports with smaller or more crowded terminals. This is why many recent travelers have highlighted issues specifically with disembarkation in New Orleans.

Hey! I was right there for the start of that altercation. I was the guy that got between the young man and the older gentleman that he was yelling at about fighting. The young man came around the corner, skipping the LONG line, hoping to integrate into the line and get off quickly. I had a feeling about the situation. The young man ended up next to me as we were shuffling along when the older guy behind me and his wife started to talk at the kid about the line. I knew it wasn’t going to go well. I turned and saw the older guy put his hand on the kid’s arm, not aggressively, just in a hey I’m talking to you way, and the kid did not take that well. He started yelling at the older guy, posting up yelling at the guy to “put his hands on him again and you’ll find out” etc. Some chest puffing, being loud, immature and not so civilized behavior. I wasn’t about to let a fight break out right on top of me so I grabbed the kids bag with my right hand and put myself between the two trying to tell the kid to stop and just move in front of me (deescalation > fighting). Kid turned around and that’s where the cruise employee started talking to him. The employee told him he needed to get out of the line and go to the back of the line. Kid proceeded to yell at the employee, calling him a “little bitch” and asking who is going to make him. Cruise employee pointed at security and said “him”. Kid goes “does he have a gun? Because if not a mf isn’t going to stop me and imma just walk past”. We get right by the scanner and that’s when the kid took off around the corner where the crowd, cruise employee, and security got a hold of him. We got past the scanners and lost sight of it. We heard he was fighting the security guard. Then like 20 minutes later the young man ends up right behind me again as we were now in the port terminal before we hit customs. He was breathing pretty hard. As soon as there was space he went about walking past everyone and we lost sight of him again. Now soon after we were held up for like 10-15 minutes so maybe he caused another commotion up by customs and that made the start of the congestion really bad. There was an escalator behind us that I KNOW was crowded. We heard a woman had fallen down it face first. But yeah, it was crazy. Definitely a rough disembarkation.
Oh my! That sounds crazy. I am so sorry that happened – as if disembarkation isn’t already a bummer at the end of your cruise! Hopefully they can figure something out to improve the process.
