I had dreamed of going to Tenerife for many years after first hearing Ed Sheeran’s love ballad “Tenerife Sea”, inspired by the island’s beauty. A cruise to the Canary Islands was on my bucket list, and I finally made it happen in 2022.
Many cruise lines sail to the Canary Islands, which often includes a stop in Tenerife. The best time to visit is in the summer, although you can find sailings in spring and early fall.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, making this island the perfect cruise stop. Most itineraries depart from mainland Europe and visit the Canary Islands, such as England, Spain, and Portugal. You can look forward to experiencing everything from beaches and colonial towns to volcanic landscapes.
If your ship is docking in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this guide will help you make the most of your one-day visit, covering where ships dock, what to do nearby, and the best excursions for exploring the island.
Where do cruise ships dock in Tenerife?

Cruise ships dock at Muelle Sur or Muelle Norte, both of which are close to downtown Santa Cruz. Most vessels arrive at Muelle Sur, which is a long breakwater pier that can host up to five cruise ships at a time.
If your ship is at Muelle Sur, the walk to Plaza de España (the city center) takes about 15–20 minutes, or you can usually take the free port shuttle that runs between the pier and the main square.
Docking at the newer Muelle Norte cruise terminal (opened in 2016) means you’re even closer, with only about a 5-minute walk from the city center.

At the port, you’ll usually find taxis, car rentals, and a small cruise terminal with basic facilities. Recent reports from cruisers state that taxis can sometimes be limited, so it’s best to arrange transportation in advance if needed.
In addition, you can use rideshare services in Tenerife, such as Uber, and rentable scooters for more transportation options.
Either way, Santa Cruz’s port is very convenient. The terminal facilities include a waiting lounge and tourist information, but most shops and restaurants are just outside in the city.
In short, you’ll be in the heart of Santa Cruz as soon as you step off the ship!
Should I book a shore excursion while cruising to Tenerife?

It’s not necessary to book a shore excursion in Tenerife while visiting by cruise ship.
The port is conveniently located in Santa Cruz, right near the city center. However, if you want to venture further from the port, booking a shore excursion would be the best option to ensure a smooth day. There aren’t many roads in Tenerife, so you can find yourself stuck in traffic unexpectedly.
You don’t need a shore excursion if you plan to explore Santa Cruz de Tenerife, visit Playa de Las Teresitas, or take the tram to La Laguna, as these are easily accessible by public transport or taxi.
However, booking an excursion is recommended for visiting Mount Teide or Northern Tenerife, as these destinations require longer travel times, reservations, or guided experiences.
If you prefer a hassle-free day with a guaranteed return to the ship, a shore excursion is a great option, especially for trips to Teide National Park.
Things to do near the Tenerife cruise port (within walking distance)

Santa Cruz de Tenerife offers plenty to see and do within walking distance or a short ride from the port.
If you prefer to stay near the port and explore on foot, below are some highlights minutes away from the cruise pier. These attractions make it easy to enjoy your time in Santa Cruz without needing transportation, also saving you money!

- Plaza de España – The city’s main square, featuring fountains, cafés, and access to the underground remains of Castillo de San Cristóbal. A great starting point for exploring the city center.
- Auditorio de Tenerife – A striking, wave-shaped modern concert hall, often compared to the Sydney Opera House. You can admire this architectural marvel along the waterfront, about a 20-minute walk from Plaza de España.
- Palmetum – A botanical garden built on a former landfill, now home to the largest collection of palm trees in Europe. A peaceful green space with ocean views.
- Parque Marítimo César Manrique – A seaside swimming pool complex designed by famous Canarian artist César Manrique. If you want to swim or sunbathe without heading to a beach, this is a great option.
- Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África (La Recova) – The city’s busiest market, perfect for tasting fresh fruit, cheeses, and Canarian specialties like mojo sauce and gofio. Located about 15 minutes from Plaza de España.
Top must-see attractions in Tenerife for a one-day visit

If you’re up for exploring beyond the port, these are the top must-see attractions for a one-day visit:
Playa de Las Teresitas
Distance: 15 minutes by taxi or bus 910
Tenerife’s most famous golden-sand beach, lined with palm trees and protected by a breakwater, making it ideal for swimming. There are beach bars, sun beds for rent, and a beautiful viewpoint nearby (Mirador Las Teresitas) for stunning photos.
How to get there:
- Bus 910 from near the port runs every 15 minutes and costs a couple of euros.
- A taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs around €25 one-way.

Mount Teide National Park
Distance: 1–1.5 hours by tour or rental car
Tenerife’s most famous landmark and Spain’s highest peak (3,718m/12,198ft). The park’s lava fields, craters, and unique rock formations make it feel like another planet. You can take the Teide Cable Car up near the summit for breathtaking views.
How to get there:
- Guided shore excursions are the easiest way to visit, as they include transportation and cable car reservations.
- Renting a car is an option, but mountain roads are winding, and the drive takes 1-1.5 hours from Santa Cruz. Traffic can be heavy coming back into the city during rush hour.
- Public buses are not ideal for a short visit (long travel times, limited departures).
San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Distance: 35 minutes by tram from Santa Cruz
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Laguna is Tenerife’s former capital and best-preserved colonial town. Its colorful mansions, cobbled streets, and beautiful churches make it a great spot for a leisurely stroll.
How to get there:
- Tram Line 1 from Santa Cruz runs every 5-10 minutes, taking 35 minutes to reach La Laguna.
- Taxis take 20 minutes and cost around €25 each way.

Tenerife tips for cruise passengers

- Prepare for siesta – Many shops and restaurants will close for siesta between 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. If there is a cruise ship in town, this might not always be the case, but it’s good to prepare.
- Check your ship’s all-aboard time – Always allow enough time to return, especially if visiting Teide or Loro Parque. With few roads, traffic can be an issue.
- Dress in layers – It can be warm in Santa Cruz, but much cooler at Mount Teide.
- Bring cash – Small purchases and taxis may not accept credit cards.
- Try local food – Taste papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce) or a barraquito coffee.
- Book popular attractions in advance – The Teide cable car and Loro Parque tickets can sell out.
Tenerife is a fantastic cruise stop with something for everyone – from beaches and volcanic landscapes to charming colonial streets. It’s one of my favorite cruise destinations in the world, so you’re in for a treat!
Whether you choose to relax on Las Teresitas, explore Mount Teide, or stroll through La Laguna, your day in Tenerife is sure to be memorable.
