British Isles Cruise Outfit Guide: What to Wear and Pack

After experiencing the region during different seasons, I’ve learned that figuring out what to pack for a British Isles cruise can be challenging. Unlike the Caribbean or Mediterranean, where the weather is often more predictable, the British Isles can bring sunshine, wind, cool temperatures, and rain all in the same day.

I’ve sailed around the British Isles multiple times, most recently in the fall of 2023. That cruise took me through England, Scotland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland with some of my best friends. Earlier that same summer, I also cruised with my husband from Amsterdam to Iceland and the British Isles, with stops across Northern Ireland, England, and Ireland along the way.

In fact, my first British Isles cruise was back in high school, so I’ve had the opportunity to experience this region during different seasons and weather conditions over the years.

As expected, my British Isles cruise in October was noticeably cooler than June. But even during my summer sailing, I regularly wore light jackets, sweaters, and long pants. A rain jacket was essential during my fall British Isles cruise, although we were fortunate to enjoy plenty of sunshine as well.

If you’re looking for outfit inspiration or packing ideas, you’ve come to the right place. Although I’m definitely not a fashionista, I love bringing some of my favorite outfits on a cruise. I work from home in Florida, so I don’t always get the opportunity to wear my sweaters, jackets, boots, and fall dresses.

Here’s exactly what I packed and wore in each port, along with some of my best tips for staying comfortable during a British Isles cruise.

Average British Isles Cruise Temperatures

The British Isles cruise season is relatively short, and even summer temperatures are much cooler than you’ll find in the Mediterranean.

  • May: 50–60°F with cool temperatures, frequent showers, and long daylight hours.
  • June: 55–65°F with mild weather, occasional rain, and some surprisingly warm days.
  • July & August: 60–70°F with the warmest temperatures of the year, though rain and wind remain possible.
  • September: 55–65°F with cooler evenings and more frequent rain.
  • October: 45–60°F with chilly temperatures, wind, and increased chances of rain.

What to pack for a British Isles cruise will depend heavily on the time of year you’re sailing. My cruise in early June was much warmer than the cool, rainy itinerary in late October. I packed similarly for both itineraries, but I definitely needed to bring warmer attire for the fall sailing.

What to Wear on a British Isles Cruise in the Summer

Even during the summer, I found myself relying on layers in the British Isles. Temperatures were comfortable during the day, but mornings, evenings, and windy sea days caled for a light jacket or sweater. Lightweight pants, leggings, athletic dresses, and comfortable walking shoes were staples throughout the trip.

Here’s exactly what I wore during our British Isles cruise by port.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam was a little chilly at the end of May and beginning of June, especially in the mornings and evenings. This really surprised me! Luckily, I had packed plenty of pants and jackets to wear. And coming from the rising temperatures in Florida, I was happy to leave the humid weather behind.

On our first day, I wore leggings with a sweater and jacket, which ended up being perfect for exploring the city comfortably.

By the second day, temperatures had warmed up enough for a short-sleeve jumpsuit with pants. I also packed a long-sleeve dress that worked well for a canal cruise and embarkation day.

Cobh, Ireland

Cobh, Ireland was one of those ports where the weather felt mild but still had a noticeable chill in the air. I wore leggings with a white tank top layered under a lightweight long-sleeve shirt, which made it easy to adjust throughout the day. The weather warmed up significantly in the afternoon, so I was glad I could take off my long sleeve sweater.

Layers are especially helpful in Ireland, where conditions can change quickly.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

During our summer sailing to the British Isles, I wore an athletic dress paired with a lightweight white gauze long-sleeve shirt and white tennis shoes in Belfast. We booked an excursion to Giant’s Causeway, and temperatures definitely warmed up by the afternoon.

Having a lightweight layer that you can easily put on or take off is incredibly helpful. Comfortable walking shoes are also a must, especially if you’re exploring beyond the city. I love my white Hoka sneakers!

Zaandam

By the time we returned to the Netherlands, the weather had become noticeably warmer than our embarkation day. I wore an athletic dress for the day, which was comfortable for walking and exploring while still feeling put together.

Even though temperatures were warmer, I still kept a light layer nearby since evenings in this region can cool down quickly.

Summer British Isles Cruise: What to Wear Onboard

While summer sailings around the British Isles are certainly warmer than fall cruises, I still found myself reaching for layers throughout the trip.

For dinner, I typically wore long-sleeve dresses or dresses paired with a denim jacket or lightweight sweater. As the weather was cooler moving further north, I transitioned to wearing leggings, boots, and sweaters to dinner.

Unlike my October sailing, I rarely needed anything heavy for truly cold temperatures onboard, which made it easier to pack lighter while still being prepared for changing weather conditions.

What to Wear on a British Isles Cruise in the Fall

While summer sailings around the British Isles can be mild, fall cruises require a much warmer wardrobe. I sailed the region in October 2023 with my friends, and we were among the last cruise ships of the season in many ports.

Temperatures were noticeably cooler and rain was more frequent. During this shoulder season sailing, layering became even more essential.

London (Southampton), England

Our cruise departed from Southampton in England, but we spent one night in London before embarking. It definitely felt like fall, and we loved the cozy weather! I wore a long black jacket over a long-sleeve dress, paired with sheer fleece-lined leggings for warmth and comfortable boots for walking.

We spent the day walking around London and managed to avoid the rain for most of the day, but the cool temperatures and overcast skies made me glad I packed plenty of layers. We didn’t need any hats or gloves at this point in the cruise.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh, Scotland was one of our most anticipated ports of the entire cruise! Our day was packed from sunrise (literally) until all aboard time. For our day exploring the city, I wore a leather trench coat with black leggings, comfortable tall boots, and a plaid skirt.

In the morning during our tender ride it was significantly cooler, so I wore a white scarf for extra warmth! The weather was crisp and sunny by the afternoon, making it perfect weather for exploring the city, visiting the castle, and plenty of shopping.

Inverness, Scotland

As we sailed farther north, temperatures continued to drop. We booked an excursion for our visit to Inverness, which included a visit to Loch Ness lake, along with a stop at the Culloden Battlefield. At the end of the day, we spent some time shopping in town and walking along the river.

For Inverness, I layered leggings, Chelsea boots, a heavier green sweater, my heavier coat, a scarf, and a hat in the morning. Between the cool temperatures and occasional wind, this was one of the days I appreciated having my warmer layers.

Orkney Islands

The Orkney Islands were chilly, drizzly, and noticeably cooler than ports farther south. This was our northernmost port during the 10-night itinerary on Norwegian Star, so we dressed in our warmest clothes.

We spent most of the day outdoors visiting the Standing Stones and exploring the countryside before doing a little shopping in town. For this day, I wore leggings, boots, a dark gray sweater, and a brown teddy-style jacket for extra warmth. We did use our umbrella in the morning during a slight downpour, but it cleared up quickly!

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Belfast ended up being one of our rainier days during the British Isles cruise. I wore a long-sleeve black dress with a black rain jacket and a pink scarf for warmth.

We spent much of the day indoors at Titanic Belfast before finding a cozy pub for dinner and drinks. A waterproof outer layer was absolutely essential in this port, although we didn’t spend too much time outside because of the rain.

Cork (Cobh), Ireland

Our visit to Cobh, Ireland ended up being much longer than planned. A storm moved through the British Isles, forcing our ship to remain overnight and cancel scheduled calls to the Isle of Man and Dublin.

On the first day, we took the train from Cobh to Cork before continuing on to Kinsale, which ended up being one of the most memorable stops of the trip. I wore leggings with a black rain jacket, scarf, rust-colored turtleneck, and a denim dress layered over the top.

By the evening, the rain had arrived, and we were very thankful we had packed umbrellas!

For our unexpected second day in port, we stayed close to the ship and wandered around the quaint town of Cobh. I wore another trench coat with leggings, boots, and an oatmeal-colored sweater. It wasn’t rainy this day, but we had overcast skies and cooler temperatures.

Weymouth

As we sailed farther south and began making our way back toward London, the weather became slightly warmer. During our last stop in Weymouth, I wore a long-sleeve black dress paired with white tennis shoes for the day.

This charming seaside destination felt much warmer than our northern ports, proving just how much temperatures can vary throughout a British Isles itinerary. And for one day, I didn’t need any leggings!

Fall British Isles Cruise: What to Wear Onboard

Onboard outfits for British Isles Cruise

Unlike a Caribbean cruise where you’ll spend much of your time in swimsuits and pool attire, a fall British Isles cruise calls for much cozier clothing onboard.

We only had one scheduled sea day on our October sailing, plus an unexpected sea day when weather forced itinerary changes, so comfort quickly became the priority.

During the day, I mostly wore leggings or lounge pants paired with crewneck sweatshirts and sweaters. Since temperatures were cool throughout the cruise, these outfits were perfect for relaxing around the ship, grabbing coffee, or watching the scenery from the outdoor decks.

I also wore my white tennis shoes frequently and occasionally slipped on sandals with socks as an easy option around the cabin. Looking back, I probably would have packed a pair of cozy slip-on shoes designed for cooler weather.

We were sailing aboard Norwegian Star with Norwegian Cruise Line, so we didn’t need to worry about a strict dress code or formal night. Evening attire was fairly casual, but definitely reflected the cooler season across the British Isles. I primarily wore long-sleeve dresses to dinner, often paired with boots.

One item I was particularly glad I packed was plenty of black leggings. I wore them almost every day, pairing them with dresses, skirts, sweaters, and jackets throughout the cruise. Leggings are easy layers to bring because they hardly take up any room in your suitcase but can add extra warmth without too much bulk.

My friends packed jeans and heavier pants, which also worked well when paired with sweaters and layers.

What to Pack for a British Isles Cruise

Passports and Visas for Cruise

UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Don’t forget to check whether you need a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before your cruise. Many travelers now need this pre-travel approval to visit the United Kingdom, including those arriving by cruise ship.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

You’ll likely spend hours walking through cities, castles, museums, and historic town centers. Comfortable walking shoes are easily one of the most important items you can pack. My white tennis shoes had many miles after our trip!

Warm Rain Jacket

If there’s one item I never travel without in the British Isles, it’s a waterproof rain jacket. Even when forecasts look promising, weather can change quickly. I prefer a long, black rain jacket that can be worn with any outfit.

To be honest, I packed four jackets for my British Isles cruise in October, which was overkill. I could have easily just packed my rain jacket and one other option.

Waterproof Boots

For spring and fall sailings especially, waterproof boots are worth the luggage space. They help keep your feet dry while navigating rain-soaked streets, countryside attractions, and muddy pathways. You truly never know when you might have a downpour during a British Isles cruise, so we wore our boots pretty much every day!

Leggings

As I mentioned above, leggings were easily my most-worn clothing item during my fall cruise. I packed probably ten pairs of leggings to wear during the two-week trip. They paired well with dresses, skirts, sweaters, and jackets while adding extra warmth. If you’re someone who prefers leggings over jeans, pack a few extra pairs.

Lightweight Layers

Pack cardigans, sweaters, denim jackets, and long-sleeve tops that can easily be added or removed throughout the day. This was true for both sailings, but especially important during my summer British Isles cruise. I wore light layers almost every day of our cruise with cooler mornings and warmer afternoons.

Scarves and Hats

A scarf can add extra warmth on windy days, especially in Scotland and northern ports. For fall sailings, I’d recommend packing a hat and scarf for extra comfort. I needed a hat during our stop in Inverness and wore a scarf almost every day of our cruise.

Umbrella

We didn’t need an umbrella every day, but when we did, we were very glad to have it. Our evening in Cork, Ireland was particularly rainy, so we appreciated having the umbrella while walking back to the ship. We also used our umbrella during the morning of our visit to Orkney Islands during a quick rain.

Crossbody Bag

A secure crossbody bag is perfect for sightseeing and keeps your hands free while exploring. I packed two different crossbody purses for this cruise, but I prefered a versatile belt bag that could be worn on my waist or as a crossbody.

What I learned packing for a British Isles cruise

Tower Bridge in London, England

After cruising the British Isles during both summer and fall, I’ve found that packing successfully comes down to one important strategy: layers.

Unlike the Mediterranean, where you can often rely on consistently warm weather, you can experience all four seasons during a British Isles cruise.

If you’re prepared with comfortable shoes, a waterproof jacket, and versatile layers, you’ll be ready to enjoy everything from Scottish castles and Irish pubs to charming English seaside towns, regardless of what the weather decides to do.
