7 things you can request for your cruise cabin to make you more comfortable

Cruise cabin requests to elevate your experience

Cruise cabins are known for being compact, and while they’re designed to maximize space, sometimes the standard setup doesn’t fit your personal preferences.

In general, your cruise cabin will have everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a bed, closet, vanity, and bathroom.

Luckily, you can request certain items from your cruise stateroom attendant to make your stay more comfortable. Although I’ve cruised more than 50 times, I only learned recently about a few of these cruise cabin upgrades!

These items are complimentary, and if they aren’t available, your attendant will usually offer an alternative solution.

Here are seven things you can request for your cruise cabin to elevate your experience.

1. Extra hangers

Closet space can be limited in your cruise cabin. If you’ve packed for formal nights onboard or just prefer to keep clothes wrinkle-free, extra hangers can be a lifesaver.

Some people prefer to bring their own compact hangers from home, but this isn’t really necessary.

In addition, your cabin closet will likely have more space for storage than elsewhere, so you’ll want to optimize your space. Simply ask your stateroom attendant for extra hangers, and they’ll happily bring you more. No need to squeeze five shirts on one hanger!

2. Mattress topper

Cruise beds are generally comfortable, but if you prefer a softer sleep surface, request a mattress topper. Most people find the cruise cabin beds to be on the firm side, which doesn’t suit everyone.

Your cabin steward can add extra cushioning to your bed, which can make a big difference if you’re prone to back or hip discomfort. On longer sailings, this small upgrade can mean better rest every night.

3. A fan

This one is a game-changer! For the first time, I asked my cabin steward if he had any fans that we could use, as our interior stateroom was a little stuffy. This is common with cruise cabins that lack windows or balconies for airflow.

To my shock, he walked back with a full-size floor fan!

Requesting a small fan not only helped circulate air, but it also provided a soothing white noise at night. We had our fan running on high every night of the cruise, and it kept our cruise cabin comfortable throughout the night.

4. Robes

Some cruise lines only provide robes to suite guests, but they’re often available upon request in standard cabins as well. This is especially true if you have loyalty status with a cruise line, such as Royal Caribbean.

Any time I cruise with Royal Caribbean, I request a plushy bathrobe to use in our cabin. They’ve always been able to accommodate this request!

If you love lounging comfortably before dinner or want a cozy layer after a shower, ask your attendant for a bathrobe. It’s an easy way to add a touch of luxury and upgrade your cruise cabin experience.

5. Feather pillows

Just like beds, not everyone is a fan of the provided pillows. In fact, my husband brings his own pillow from home when we cruise. I always roll my eyes when he’s packing it, but I am also jealous once we are onboard and he’s using his pillow from home.

If you’re not a fan of the standard synthetic pillows, request a feather pillow instead. Many cruise ships carry feather pillows for guests upon request, but only in limited supply.

If you prefer something softer and more moldable, request them early in your cruise, and your cabin steward will assist with your request. A good pillow can make all the difference in how well you sleep, and no one wants neck pain during their vacation!

6. Additional towels or blankets

While cruise cabins are stocked with basics, you can always request more. I find myself constantly asking for more towels, especially during a warm Caribbean sailing where I am showering more often.

During my last cruise, I requested additional towels each morning so I could have fresh towels for my pre-dinner shower.

Whether you want extra pool towels, a blanket for balcony lounging, or additional bath towels for your family, your attendant will happily provide them.

7. Ice bucket service

If you’re someone who prefers ice in your beverages, you can request an ice bucket for your stateroom. Almost every cruise cabin has a cooling fridge, which can help keep your ice cold for longer.

Your cabin steward will refill your ice bucket daily, or however often you request (within reason). This can be especially handy if you bring your own sodas or wine onboard!
