Planning a trip to the Emerald Coast? Destin, Florida offers far more than just beautiful beaches. From excursions on the water and locally owned restaurants to a vibrant harbor and strong local culture, there are countless things to do in Destin that make it a destination travelers return to year after year.
To help visitors navigate the best of the area, Jamie Kamber—Destin local since 2017, photographer, and editor of Destin Snapshots—shares her picks for the top things to do in Destin from a local perspective.

Through years of exploring the Emerald Coast and documenting local events, restaurants, and hidden gems, she highlights experiences that go beyond the typical tourist checklist.
Whether you’re planning your first Gulf Coast getaway or returning for your annual beach vacation, this travel guide covers 10 of the best things to do in Destin, blending must-see attractions with local insight to help you make the most of your time in this coastal Florida town.
1. Go on a Dolphin Cruise

A dolphin cruise is one of those Destin experiences that truly lives up to the hype. Seeing them swim and jump from the water never gets old!
Tours typically travel through the Choctawhatchee Bay (near Crab Island), East Pass, and into the Gulf, giving you multiple chances to spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat.
It’s also a fun way to see Destin from a different perspective, offering views of the shoreline, harbor, and emerald water that you simply don’t get from land.
2. Spend the Day at Crab Island

Crab Island is one of the most famous things to do in Destin for a reason. This submerged sandbar near the Destin Bridge is accessible only by boat and has become a popular gathering spot for boaters looking to enjoy crystal-clear water and a lively, social atmosphere.
While it’s no longer an actual island, the shallow water—typically just 1 to 4 feet deep depending on the tide—makes it ideal for floating, wading, and relaxing in the sun. May through September is prime time to visit, and going at high tide offers the clearest water. This beginner-friendly Crab Island guide can help with what to bring, how to get there, and the best times to go.
3. Dine at Local Restaurants

Destin has no shortage of restaurants, and while there are plenty of “touristy” spots, seeking out locally owned favorites will make your trip far more memorable. You won’t be disappointed by these popular eateries:
- Boshamps: Known for fresh Gulf seafood, Southern-inspired flavors, and waterfront views that are hard to beat. My favorite dish is the Pan Roasted Gulf Grouper, which is served on a feta cheese souffle with garlic braised spinach, house-made tomato jam and citrus butter.
- East Pass Coffee Co: Locals love East Pass Coffee Co for its consistently great coffee, fresh and flavorful food, and relaxed atmosphere that makes it an easy spot to hang out and stay a while.
- Harbor Docks: A must-visit for sushi, fresh seafood, and views of the harbor.
- Camille’s: This sidewalk cafe right across the street from the beach serves up breakfast, lunch, coffee, cocktails and more. Grab a drink and enjoy a leisurely stroll along Scenic Hwy 98. In the evenings, the upstairs restaurant offers sushi, seafood and more elevated fare.
- La Paz: A go-to for Mexican food, margaritas, live music on Taco Tuesday, and a laid-back dining experience.
- Dewey Destin’s Seafood on the bay for freshly caught seafood followed by ice cream from Pink Coyote Dessert Co. They are located right on the water and offer gorgeous sunset views!
4. Beach Day at Henderson Beach State Park

If you’re looking for a quieter, more relaxed beach experience, Henderson Beach State Park is the place to go.
With protected dunes, sugar-white sand, and emerald water, it’s ideal for swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing away from the busier public beach access points. There’s also a nature trail that winds through the dunes if you want to go for a scenic walk.
5. Book a Fishing Charter

Destin is known as the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village, so why not give it a try? Fishing charters range from inshore and bay fishing to deep-sea excursions in the Gulf.
Whether you’re an experienced angler or a total beginner, charter captains make the experience approachable, fun, and often handle everything from bait to cleanup.
6. Take a Walk along Norriego Point

Norriego Point offers some of the best views in Destin, with the bustling harbor on one side and sweeping views of East Pass on the other.
Enjoy a scenic walk along the new boardwalk and dune crossovers, swim in the shallow tide pools, or look for crabs and fish near the rock formations. It’s a great place to slow down and take in Destin from a different angle.
7. Shop and Stroll at Destin Commons

Destin Commons is an open-air shopping and dining destination that offers something for everyone. In addition to national retailers, you’ll find local boutiques, restaurants, and entertainment options like a movie theater and bowling alley.
It’s especially popular with families thanks to its expansive lawn with games and seating, playground, and splash pad. Destin Commons is also known for its festive atmosphere, going all out with seasonal décor and celebrations throughout the year such as 4th of July and Christmas.
8. Visit Captain Leonard Destin Park

A true hidden gem in Destin, Captain Leonard Destin Park features a small beach area, boardwalk, pier, playground, splash pad, and covered pavilions perfect for a picnic. It’s an especially great spot for families with young kids, as the calm bay waters are much gentler than the waves and rip currents of the Gulf.
Kids can easily move between the beach, splash pad, and playground, and it’s also a convenient launch point for stand-up paddle boards if you want to paddle out toward Crab Island.
9. Experience Local Events and Festivals

One of the best ways to experience Destin like a local is by attending community events. Throughout the year, you’ll find seafood festivals, holiday celebrations, outdoor concerts, pop-up markets with local vendors, and family-friendly gatherings.
These events showcase Destin’s small-town charm and strong sense of community. A few favorites include the Destin Seafood Festival, Tequila & Taco Fest at Baytowne Wharf, Destin Fishing Rodeo in October, and Harvest Food & Wine Festival on 30A.
10. Explore the Destin History & Fishing Museum

For a deeper understanding of the area, the Destin History & Fishing Museum is well worth a visit (especially if you’re looking for indoor things to do in Destin). It tells the story of Destin’s roots as a fishing village, highlighting the people, boats, and traditions that shaped the town long before it became a popular vacation destination.
It also features interactive exhibits that kids can enjoy, a great gift shop, the original Destin Post Office building, and the oldest seine fishing boat still in existence.
Destin is more than just beautiful beaches

As you can see, Destin has so much to offer. It’s a place full of history, local flavor, and experiences that keep people coming back year after year.
Whether you’re on the water, exploring local spots, or learning about the town’s past, these activities offer a well-rounded way to experience Destin through a local lens.
