Norway Cruise Outfit Guide: What to Wear and Pack

Norway Cruise Outfits: What to wear and pack

Norway is one of the most incredible places in the world to visit, especially cruises through the majestic fjords.

I’ve cruised to Norway twice and already have a third cruise to Norway booked for this summer. The scenery is every bit as breathtaking as you imagine with towering mountains rising straight out of the water.

Around every corner, you’ll find dramatic waterfalls cascading off the cliffs and quaint villages nestled in the countryside. And you absolutely won’t forget the blue-green glow of glacial lakes.

It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

Last summer, my husband and I spent seven nights onboard Celebrity Apex with Celebrity Cruises for a Norwegian Fjord sailing. It was an amazing experience visiting Zeebrugge in Belgium, along with Flam, Olden, and Bergen in Norway. Our sailing departed from Southhampton, England, where we spent a few nights in London before the cruise.

But packing for a Norway cruise isn’t as straightforward as tossing a few dresses and sandals into a suitcase. The weather can fluctuate dramatically from day to day, even in summer. For reference, we cruised in early June.

During our cruise, we experienced everything from warm sunny afternoons to chilly mornings and rainy days that made waterproof layers essential.

If you’re headed to the fjords this summer on a Norway cruise, here’s what you need to know about weather, outfits, and what to pack so you stay comfortable.

Onboard and sea day outfits

Sea days and time onboard were casual and relaxed on our Norway cruise, mostly because of the cooler weather. Unlike warmer itineraries where people tend to dress up during the day, most guests wore comfortable and functional outfits.

You want to prioritize bringing outfits that you can lounge inside or step out on the deck to enjoy the scenery.

Many people opted for cozy layers they could wear all day and and still feel comfortable enough to head outside when we sailed through the fjords. Comfort clearly took priority over fashion, and it fit the overall vibe of the itinerary perfectly.

Personally, I loved wearing a matching lounge set, usually a soft sweater paired with lounge shorts. It felt cute enough to wear around the ship but was still comfortable for relaxing in the cabin or spending time in the indoor spaces. On chillier mornings or evenings, I often swapped the shorts for leggings.

Because of the cooler temperatures, many traditional summer outfits weren’t as practical onboard as they might be on a Mediterranean cruise. Instead, prioritize pieces that you can layer and that transition easily between indoor lounges and outdoor decks worked best.

Also, be sure to pack a swimsuit for hot-tubbing on the top deck! One of my favorite memories was relaxing in the hot tub with my husband as we sailed through the fjords after dinner.

Evenings onboard and formal wear

While cruise lines like Celebrity have dress codes for specialty restaurants or certain events, most nights were fairly casual. The ambiance was more elegant, while still being relaxed.

For evenings onboard, I wore long-sleeve dresses almost exclusively. As always, I prioritize packing comfortable and versatile dresses that I could also wear ashore. Only a few dresses were exclusively packed for evenings onboard.

I was especially thankful I packed a denim jacket, which I wore on cooler nights onboard and while walking around in port. It was versatile for our cruise and didn’t take up much space in my luggage.

Each port on our Norway cruise brought different new experiences and differing weather conditions. From hiking in Olden to wandering the streets of Bergen, the weather varied from low 40s with rain to 70s with sunshine!

Here’s exactly what I wore for each day of our sailing so you can have a better idea of what to pack for your Norway cruise. You’ll want to consider how you plan to spend your days ashore, especially if you’re hoping to do any hiking or outdoor activities.

Zeebrugge (Bruges)

For our day in Belgium, we booked an excursion transfer from the port of Zeebrugge to Bruges. We spent the morning and early afternoon walking around the picturesque town!

For our leisure day walking around Bruges, I wore cargo pants, a white t-shirt, and white tennis shoes, which felt comfortable and practical for a full day of exploring on foot. The morning was definitely cooler, so I added a black denim jacket, which was easy to take on and off as temperatures warmed up.

Flåm, Norway

In Flåm, we did the classic Norway in a Nutshell experience, including a ride on the famous Flåm Railway. The morning started off cold, but it ended up being one of the warmer and sunnier days of the cruise.

For this excursion, I wore leggings, black boots, a sweater, a rain jacket, and a hat. By the afternoon, I wasn’t wearing the hat or jacket anymore, but I was still glad I had packed them. This was a perfect example of why layering matters so much in Norway, as the weather changed significantly over just a few hours!

Olden, Norway

Norway Cruise Hiking Outfit

Our excursion in Olden was a hike to Briksdal Glacier, which followed a paved path (much to my relief). You will still want to have comfortable shoes for this, whether that’s tennis shoes or hiking boots.

This day was the coldest and rained most of the day. For our hike, I opted for leggings, a long-sleeve athletic top, and my rain jacket, along with a headband to keep warm. I wore tennis shoes for the hike, and surprisingly, they stayed clean the entire time! Hiking boots would have worked just as well here, but comfortable sneakers were more than sufficient.

Bergen, Norway

We explored Bergen on our own, as the ship docked right in the city center. Bergen greeted us with sunshine, though it was still brisk and cool. Again, I opted for leggings, a sweater, and my rain jacket.

The sun made it feel warmer, and I was especially happy I had packed sunglasses, which came in handy while walking around the city. Even on a sunny day, the cool air reinforced how useful layers are in Norway.

What is the weather like during a Norway cruise?

Weather in Norway is famously unpredictable, especially when you’re cruising among fjords or heading farther north. Most summer cruises run from late spring through early fall, and even then, temperatures can vary widely.

During my trip, we experienced mornings in the low 40s that warmed into the 60s later in the day. Other days that stayed cool and rainy from start to finish.

Even summer sunshine didn’t feel particularly warm once you factored in wind off the water. If your itinerary heads further north or includes more rugged, active excursions, you’ll want to prepare for cooler conditions. Because of this variability, layering is essential when packing.

What are the best months for a Norway cruise?

Most Norway cruises operate between May and September, when conditions are best for scenic cruising and outdoor exploration. Specifically, June through August are the most popular months with milder temperatures, long daylight hours, and peak fjord scenery. However, these months also bring higher demand and larger crowds.

May and September are good options if you want to visit during the shoulder-season. You can expect to find fewer tourists and a quieter vibe in port. However, weather can be more variable during these months, so keep that in mind. Regardless, the fjords are still stunning!

In addition, some cruise lines sail year-round in Norway, particularly along the coast. These itineraries offer a very different experience, often focused on local culture, winter landscapes, and Northern Lights rather than classic fjord cruising.

For instance, Viking Cruises offers itineraries “In Search of the Northern Lights” in January, February and March. Conditions can be colder and more harsh during the winter, making proper layering and cold-weather gear essential.

No matter when you sail, Norway’s weather is unpredictable. Even in summer, temperatures can be cool and rain is common, making layers and waterproof outerwear essential.
