Celebrity Cruises has unveiled a new destination discovery program for its upcoming Celebrity River Cruises, introducing a collection of curated cultural experiences designed to immerse travelers more deeply in Europe’s most iconic cities.
The shore excursion program focuses on meaningful local connections and small-group exploration. Instead of traditional sightseeing tours, guests will experience destinations through residents, artisans, and cultural insiders who bring each place to life.
The new approach reflects the brand’s focus on offering luxury travel with authentic, locally inspired experiences. Celebrity River Cruises will mark the brand’s first entry into the European river cruise market, with a fleet of purpose-built ships expected to debut in 2027.
The new destination discovery program offers an early look at how the cruise line plans to differentiate its river experience from traditional operators.
Four unique ways Celebrity River Cruises will bring Europe to life

The destination program will be built around four discovery categories, many of which will be included experiences designed to give guests deeper access to local culture. Each program is designed to offer a different perspective on Europe’s culture, history, and daily life.
Storyteller Series offers local perspectives in Europe’s iconic cities

The Storyteller Series places travelers alongside residents who know their cities best. These guided experiences reveal the personal stories behind famous destinations.
In Amsterdam, for example, guests might cruise through lesser-known canals with a captain whose family has navigated the waterways for generations. In Prague, travelers could explore the city’s historic brewing culture while visiting beloved taverns with a local brewer who shares the traditions behind the region’s famous beers.
Skillmaster Series connects travelers with local artisans

For travelers who prefer hands-on experiences, the Skillmaster Series focuses on learning from local craftspeople and artisans.
Guests might cook traditional dishes in a grandmother’s kitchen in Budapest or join a local artist in Amsterdam to learn painting techniques inspired by Vincent van Gogh. These intimate sessions aim to create genuine connections with the people who preserve regional traditions.
Keys to the City lets guests explore Europe like a local

Another component, the Keys to the City Series, offers a flexible way for guests to explore on their own schedule.
Through a self-guided digital platform, travelers can follow curated routes based on personal interests such as art, food, history, or architecture. Along the way, local hosts stationed throughout the city provide access to hidden spots and exclusive experiences that typical visitors might never discover.
Celebrity Takeover Experiences offer exclusive access

Perhaps the most unique offering is the Celebrity Takeover Series. Once per sailing, a landmark European venue will be privately reserved and transformed into an exclusive event available only to Celebrity River Cruises guests.
While the company has not yet revealed specific venues, the concept promises memorable, one-of-a-kind experiences that go far beyond traditional shore excursions.
Extended stays in Europe’s cultural capitals

To complement the onboard experience, Celebrity River Cruises will also offer curated pre- and post-cruise land programs in cities including Prague, Budapest, and Amsterdam.
These extended stays will feature premium hotel accommodations, daily guided explorations, and concierge service to help travelers navigate each destination. Just like the onboard discovery program, the land experiences will emphasize smaller groups and locally led tours designed to provide deeper cultural insight.
The new destination experiences will be available across Celebrity River Cruises itineraries beginning in 2027 and 2028. According to the company, pre- and post-cruise land programs will go on sale later this summer, while many of the shore experiences are expected to become bookable next year.
A focus on authentic connections

With this new program, Celebrity River Cruises is positioning itself as a river cruise experience that offers luxury with cultural immersion. The new Celebrity River Cruises destination experiences focus on local storytellers, skilled artisans, and exclusive access to cultural landmarks, giving travelers a richer understanding of Europe’s iconic cities and traditions.
While Celebrity Cruises is best known for its ocean ships, the new river cruise program shows how the brand is expanding its premium travel offerings.
As river cruising continues to grow in popularity, the Celebrity River Cruises destination experiences reflect a shift toward more personal and meaningful travel—where the highlight of the journey is not just the destination, but the people and stories that bring each place to life.
About Celebrity River Cruises

Celebrity River Cruises is Celebrity Cruises’ upcoming expansion into the European river cruise market, marking the brand’s first move into river travel. Backed by Royal Caribbean Group, the new venture represents a major long-term investment rather than a small experiment in a growing segment of the cruise industry.
The cruise line has ordered a fleet of 10 purpose-built river ships that are scheduled to debut in 2027. The first two vessels will be Celebrity Seeker and Celebrity Compass.
These ships will initially operate itineraries on some of Europe’s most iconic waterways, including the Rhine and Danube Rivers, offering port-focused sailings with frequent stops and overnight stays designed to encourage deeper exploration.

Demand for the new cruise line has already proven strong. The inaugural 2027 season sold out within hours of opening during priority access sales.
Celebrity has also indicated the ships will bring elements of its ocean fleet design to the rivers. The company plans to adapt popular features from its Edge Series ships, including Martini Bar–style lounges, Café al Bacio–inspired cafés, and contemporary residential-style spaces. Of course, the cruise line will tailoring these signature venues to fit the smaller scale required for river vessels.
Although the first itineraries will focus on Europe, company leadership has confirmed that the long-term vision extends beyond the continent, with future river deployments expected in destinations around the world.
